ADHD AND ME AUTHOR EVENT WITH LOCAL AUTHOR, CHELSEA DICICCO, OCTOBER 12TH, AT BARNES & NOBLE, BOWLING GREEN, KY & GALLATIN PUBLIC LIBRARY, TN

With a whole list of neurodiverse holidays, like World Mental Health Day, National Disability Employment Awareness, Down Syndrome Awareness, Dyslexia Awareness, and, of course, ADHD Awareness- October was an exciting month for libraries, bookstores, and neurodivergent families everywhere!

I was so excited to be a part of two local events hosted this October. One, hosted by Barnes and Noble, located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and the other, hosted by Gallatin Public Library, located in Gallatin, Tennessee.

BARNES AND NOBLE: STORYTIME, CRAFTS & BOOK SIGNINGS

On Saturday, October 12th, I headed out with a car full of family- my husband (aka) forever hype man, my parents, who made the drive up from North Carolina, and my 77-year-old grandma, who flew in from Florida. Having my crew of loved ones and supporters here to share in the fun made these book events an unforgettable experience.

A little about my family and how they connect to the story of ADHD AND ME:

From the beginning of my unofficial writing journey (as soon as I started making books at the fresh age of five years old, with scraps of paper bound together with my dad’s stapler, complete with full text and terrifying-yet-somehow-adorable illustrations by yours truly of cross-eyed, rainbow-colored stick-figures with gigantic heads, unibrows, and wonky arms, and don’t forget the  “about the author” bio on the back cover) my mom, dad, and grandma were my biggest fans and greatest cheerleaders. They continually encouraged me to “keep writing!” And oh, how helpful those words would later be for the journey that lay ahead. True to the task, I followed their advice and kept on writing. And writing. And writing. All the way into my adult years. Never waning for my first love of literature and stories.

Then, one day, I wrote a story about something very personal to me. My childhood experiences with ADHD. I remember how moved my parents were when they read this story, in particular. “All of your stories are good, Chel,” my dad told me, “But this one is really special.”

They then encouraged me to seriously consider pursuing publication. But I wasn’t a “real” writer. I didn’t have a four-year writing degree from a prestigious writing institute or know where to begin with querying or submitting. But I knew that the story was important. And if it had the ability to touch someone’s heart and mind… make someone feel seen or understood, or help someone to better understand or see… if it could give someone hope or make someone feel good about themselves… then I knew that I had to find a way to share it with others.

My parents echoed the same feelings. So much so that they told me they wanted to help fund the project. The funds they provided would go toward helping me enlist the illustrator who would bring Malory to life.

Now, if you’ve ever done it, you know that attempting to write and publish picture books independently is no easy task, and it’s especially tricky when you aren’t an illustrator.

Because it means that now you have to find someone whose art matches the style that you’re looking for and an artist who sees the vision of your work in the way that you want it to be portrayed, all without the help of an editor, agent, or art designer.

Finding the perfect person took time. But eventually… Malory’s artist was discovered. *Read more about the journey of discovering Malory’s artist in The Making of Malory here.*

Fast forward to today… I now have this precious book to hold in my hands and place into new ones.

Sharing my journey with others has been a life-changing experience. As an introverted person who enjoys quiet time alone with my thoughts and one-or-two close friends/family members, talking with people who I don’t know (especially about myself) is not a skill set I was born with.

Typically, I’m quiet in large groups, especially. I keep to myself and am very selective/careful with who I choose to share my innermost heart and feelings with. But when you’re a writer, there’s a side of you that needs to be shared with others. It’s that side of you- the vulnerable person who you truly are behind the page- that connects you with your readers. And that connection is nothing short of magic. Connecting with my readers has been, hands down, the most incredible, rewarding, and wonderful part of my writing journey.

The moments that make it all worthwhile for me:

Talking with a mother or grandmother about their child or grandchild and their diagnosis with ADHD or ASD, and the things they’ve experienced at school with teachers and peers, or challenges they’ve had to overcome or are facing now. Listening to people share their stories and then, in turn, seeing the emotional connection they make with my story and with my book. It has been a whole new world of eye-opening. I’ve had so many parents come up to me and thank me for writing and sharing this book with them and for making it available for families like theirs who desperately need it. I’ve had kids come up to me amazed and tell me that the feelings of the character in the story are the same feelings they have. And seeing the smile on their face when they recognize the emotions? Or overhearing them tell their parent, “That’s how I feel.”  It’s an indescribable jumble of emotions. It makes me want to cry and dance and everything in between.

During the October event at Barnes and Noble, I talked with a mother of two; she had a boy and a girl between the ages of 6-10 (both of whom I got to meet that day) who both had ADHD. Hearing her express their experiences in the safety of that quiet little corner toward the back of the bookstore gave us both a sense of mutual calm and understanding. She spoke softly and pressed her hand to her heart as she described in detail the personal challenges that her family was currently going through and, in turn, asked thoughtful questions regarding my own experiences with ADHD.

Another woman eagerly approached my table with her five-year-old son and mother-in-law. She opened up about her son’s journey with Autism Spectrum Disorder and the different ways in which those experiences affected their everyday life, both inside and outside of their home. She shared how it affected his relationships and connection with others, whether it be at school or among friends and family. I shared details in the story and the connection of ASD and finding outlets to express ourselves, with the example of art, and Ms. Julie (a character in the book, ADHD AND ME.) I also shared with her details about my day job working in ABA Therapy as a Behavior Technician and the work I do with children with ASD. After some wonderful conversations, I then did something that I never do at author events with this book. I did a read-aloud storytime.

Why don’t I normally do a public read-aloud of ADHD AND ME?

Some books are great for reading aloud in a group. They’re fun. They’re engaging. They’re silly. But this story is gentle- best described as a quiet book to be read by a parent or close adult friend/relative to a child in a one-on-one setting. Why? Because this allows for emotional intimacy for little readers to open up about big emotions, talk with parents about how they’re feeling, or parents to ask questions and/or invite conversation after/during the story.  As I read the book aloud, I caught glimpses of tears on both mothers’ faces. Thankfully, I was able to power through the reading and not start crying myself! (I am a bit of a sap.)

The result? After storytime, we (kids + family + me) worked together on DIY crafts. Then, I signed everyone’s personal copy, ADHD AND ME, and we snapped some photos. Our families all went home with free goody bags filled with custom book swag, including crayons, coloring books, bookmarks, and stickers, with artwork from the story and their very own one-of-a-kind streamer wands.

GALLATIN PUBLIC LIBRARY MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY

Meanwhile, across town, over in Gallatin, Tennessee… our public librarians were celebrating neurodiversity of all kinds! This year, their theme was CREATIVE MINDS: EXPLORING MENTAL HEALTH THROUGH THE ARTS & LITERATURE. Though I couldn’t be there in person for this event, as I was at an author event out of state at the Barnes and Noble in Bowling Green, Kentucky, my good friends at the library sent me some fantastic photos! Two library visitors went home that day with their very own pre-signed copy of ADHD AND ME.

In closing, I’d just like to say thank you. Thank you to all my readers. Big and small. Your stories make a difference. Your voice is important. You MATTER. I appreciate each and every one of you- and there’s a list filled with names of other people who appreciate you, too! It’s great having people appreciate and love you. But it’s important to remember to appreciate and love yourself too. So, this is my personal reminder for you. APPRECIATE AND LOVE YOURSELF- YOU’RE WORTH IT!

#1 Julie Hedlund’s 12 X 12 Picture Book Challenge

Type: kidlit writers (specifically picture book writers)/paid membership/purchase window annual at the beginning of each year- membership available to be used all year, duration 1 year.

If you write kidlit, (ideally picture books, but it can be any genre of kidlit), you’re in luck. Julie Hedlund has created a fantastic writing community through her 12×12 challenge website. This is a HUGE resource for writers. There you’ll find writers who WANT to support and help you. You can find and create critique groups in the forum. You can discover new beta readers. You can join affinity groups. You can find people who are willing to swap manuscripts and offer critiques. You can learn about new writing contests happening near you or virtually. Any information you can think of, Julie’s group has it! And… if that’s not already awesome enough, you can post questions to the forum page or onto the 12×12 Facebook group page. (Note: you must be a member to access the 12×12 forum or 12×12 Facebook group).

#2 SCBWI

Type: paid membership/for children’s book writers and illustrators

Here’s another fantastic resource for writers and illustrators. SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) shares all the newest events both virtually and in person for writers to join and visit. These events are pivotal for making writing connections within the world of publishing. There you can meet and listen to editors, agents, and fellow writers or illustrators. Yes- these connections can last you a lifetime and help build your career and standing in the literary world.

#3 WRITING BARN

Type: Various groups/retreats/events/memberships/classes/paid for/ designed for writers of all genres

This is a new one that I’ve just recently discovered, (Dec 2023/Jan 2024) thanks to a very kind literary agent who referred me in their direction. And I’m so grateful she did! Joining the Writing Barn this year has been truly amazing.

What they offer:

They offer retreats, workshops, classes, and an incredible Courage to Create writing group membership.

**UPDATE as of 10/20/2024: I attended a six-month writing class called Write Submit Support, focusing on writing chapter and picture books, hosted by Kidlit author and writing instructor, Lisa Katzenberger, from March-September, 2024. (Writing class hosted through The Writing Barn).

The class included a regularly scheduled live monthly Zoom class, with other students (on camera) and your instructor. Each class had keynote discussions on various topics (our instructor often asked us what we wanted to discuss and then build her keynote around those topics), audience participation *optional* and exercises, Q&A, and occasional *light homework assigments. Homework optional- for personal growth, and was not required/checked.

The class also included monthly turn-ins (with deadlines). The monthly turn-ins were, 2 manuscripts (chapter or picture book), a monthly goal sheet, and a letter to your instructor on where you were at on your writing journey AND/OR anything else you wanted to discuss.

Your instructor would then reply to all of the above with personalized feedback. For manuscripts, our instructor would give us in depth deep read feedback and offer a stuctural critique separeately as well.

During this time, students also had free access to the Courage to Create Community- this community is usually a paid for membership. Note: I loved the Courage to Create Community so much that after my 6-month class ended, before my free access could lapse, I purchased a membership to continue with the group. Learn more About the Courage to Create Community further down in this article (see #11).

#4 READY CHAPTER 1

Type: writing organization/paid membership/all genres

Ready Chapter 1 is a newer resource for writers. It’s not specific to any genre- anyone can join. It offers helpful critique forums, community, monthly webinars, and contests with editors and agents. Pretty cool, right?

What they offer

Feedback forums, master classes, contests, community, and accountability.

**UPDATE as of 10/20/2024: This writing resource is great for writers who are working on manuscripts that are longer than your typical picture book- MG/YA/ADULT, in particular. It’s great for getting feedback on chapters and first pages.

Full disclosure: as my main focus is currently on writing picture books I did not get as much use out of this organization as I would have hoped to, for being a paid membership. That being said, if you’re writing longer books with chapters that need beta readers and feedback/structural critique, this would be a great option for you!

#5 FALL WRITING FRENZY

Type: writing contest/ FREE/ annual- EVERY October

Let’s see. The first time I joined Kaitlyn Leann Sanchez’s Fall Writing Frenzy Contest was back in 2022. And I can personally attest to the fact that this contest is a great way to meet and connect with fellow writers.

How does it work?

There are a series of pictures provided. You choose one and write a story inspired by it. You have a cap of 200 words (not including title). There’s a submission window. Once the window opens, you post the picture you chose to write about onto your blog and upload your story. Then, you go back to the official website and enter your information into the Google doc provided (with a link to your blog entry). Don’t have a blog? No worries! You can enter your info into the google doc and specify that you don’t have a blog.

If you DO have a blog… this is extra cool because everyone in the Google doc can see your title and blog address, and if your title sounds good, they might just visit your website.

You can also scroll through and find new writers this way. Leaving comments on other people’s blogs is a GREAT way to grow your reader audience, gain new followers, and make connections!

Fun fact: I found one of my critique partners through Fall Writing Frenzy. I visited her blog because she chose the same prompt as I did, and then I discovered her entry was a neurodivergent story, just like my entry! We struck up a wonderful conversation and quickly became writing friends. Fast-forward to a year later, she ended up joining my critique group. And it was all because of the connection we made during Fall Writing Frenzy! Putting yourself out there and participating in these community events is a GREAT way to find YOUR writing community.

#6 50 PRECIOUS WORDS

Type: free international writing contest/annual

Here’s another incredible annual contest. 50 precious words! Very similar to Fall Writing Frenzy, this contest, hosted by Children’s book author Vivian Kirkfield.

What is it?

This contests challenges writers to write a story in only 50 words, using a visual prompt.

Why do it?

It’s fun! You build community. And you sharpen your writing skills. I can’t tell you how enjoyable it is to share/discover these stories and images. This exercise puts a spark into writing and you meet great people along the way.

If you’re looking for a contest like this but for kids, look no further! Vivian Kirkfield also hosts a “5o precious words for kids” event.

FRIENDLY LIBRARIAN REMINDER: As a former librarian, I’m a huge advocate for connecting with your local library! Contact your library to see if there are any writing contests/groups offered near you *or online! Libraries often host different contests and writing groups at different times throughout the year (sometimes all year-round!) And chances are, if your library isn’t already doing this, they’re open to starting/creating these contests or programs if they know it’s a need or interest in their community. You can almost always find *or create* new opportunities at your local library! **If you do know of any online/in-person contests like this, offered by your library, or somewhere else, feel free to drop it in the comments to share with other readers!**

#7 PBPARTY

Type: free writing contest/annual- every February

What is it?

PBParty is an annual contest, hosted every February, by author Mindy Alyse Weiss. This contest is is for unagented writers and author/illustrators with finished and polished picture book manuscripts.

How does it work?

You submit an entry (query and first 60 – 70 words) and the judges pick a wide variety of genres for the agents/editors to read and hopefully request. 

Other things they offer:

Critique trains! Facebook group.

Why do it?

Not only is it a huge opportunity to find an agent or even get yourself a book deal with an editor, but it’s also a great way to make lasting connections in the writing community.

Between the Facebook Group, the Critique Trains, and the PBRanking Party, this is a HUGE community connector. Not to mention, if your story is chosen as one of the 50 in the showcase, you’ll be entered into a private Facebook Group, and you’ll have unlimited access- no end date!

Note to readers: two of my critique partners landed their agents thanks to the help of PBParty! And they’ve made lasting friendships with many of the group members they met through this incredible event.

#8 StoryStorm

Type: free writing contest/annual- every January

This free writing contest is hosted annually, every January, by the queen of comedy, kidlit author, and writing speaker, Tara Lazar. This is a fun, low-stakes high reward, community event where writers from everywhere band together in a month-long brainstorming of new creative story ideas.

The goal?

The Storystorm challenge is to create 30 story ideas in 31 days. You don’t have to write a manuscript (but you can if the mood strikes). You don’t need potential best-seller ideas.

This mentorship program is an especially great opportunity for anyone part of an underrepresented/marginalized group in publishing.

What is the PB Rising Stars Mentorship Program?

The #PBRisingStars Mentorship program started with a tweet, a huge response, and two authors with book deals looking for ways to give back to the KidLit community that gave so much to them.

They pair agented picture book creators that are knowledgeable about querying, author-agent relationships, being on submission, book deals, and contract language, with the next generation of children’s book creators for an immersive, three-month, one-on-one mentorship experience that is more than just a critique.

Their mission is to give experienced picture book creators the platform to pull up-and-coming picture book creators up the turbulent publishing ladder. They center Black creators, creators of color, and ALL underrepresented communities because they believe in equity. Above all, they believe that their mentors and mentees should reflect what publishing SHOULD look like.

The Daily Dozen Summer Writing Challenge first launched in the summer of 2023 with former Feature Interview Guest and kidlit author and educator Andrew Hacket. This fun initiative is very simple.

What is it?

The Daily Dozen is a challenge to focus a tiny bit of time on our creative endeavors over the summer. The goal is to spend 12 minutes a day creating NEW MATERIAL. That’s it!

Who can participate?

Absolutely anyone! This is an all-ages, all-genres, all-creators event! Unagented, agented, published, pre published… if you want to commit to your craft this summer then this challenge is for you.

And while it’s called the “Writing Challenge,” all creators are invited to take on this daily challenge to see what they can create in just 12 minutes. We’re looking at you illustrators!

I had a blast participating in this event in 2024 and wound up as one of the PRIZE winners. I ended up winning a critique with Kate Narita.

#14 PBPitch

Type: community event/ pitch contest/ FREE/ annual- exclusively for picture books

What is it?

This 24-hour pitch event happens on Twitter/X annually and is exclusively for picture books. The purpose of this event is for editors and agents to see your pitches!

How does it work?

*Pitch your PBs on X/Twitter using #PBPitch.

*Pitch manuscripts only ONCE in the morning and ONCE in the Evening. (Once before 2pm and once after.)

*If you are an author/illustrator, you can attach an image to your PB manuscript pitch.

*Include Subgenre # if it applies.

#15 Spring Fling Writing Contest

Type: writing contest/ FREE/ Annual

Your Challenge:

Find a gif and write a spring-inspired story. Blossoming flowers? Sure! Easter eggs? You bet! Mothers day? Of course! Anything related to Spring is yours for the telling.

This annual spring writing contest is for stories geared for kids 12 and under, and hosted by literary agent, Kaitlyn Leann Sanchez, and author, Ciara Oneal.

How it works

Choose a gif to inspire your story. (All gifs should be child appropriate and in no way be derogatory towards any faith, race, etc.) You have 150 words. That’s it! No more – but less is always welcome.

Important: Your title is not included in the word count. No illustration notes pretty please. Your gif should be the only visual with your story. The Spring Fling contest officially begins on April 1st. From April 1st to April 3rd, post your gif and story on your blog. (If you have one.) Then, add the link to your blog to the form on the Entries page of Ciara’s blog* Deadline for posting your story or the link to your story is April 3rd, at 11:59pm CST. Only one entry per contestant is permitted.

Today, I’m talking with debut kidlit author-illustrator Kim-Hoa Ung. We’ll be chatting about paths to publication, sharing motivation and resources, and discussing the importance of having inclusive books for kids by creators of marginalized backgrounds.

INTRODUCTIONS & BEGINNINGS

When did you first enter the kidlit publishing arena?

Hi, everyone! Thank you for having me on your wonderful blog, Chelsea! I discovered the kidlit publishing arena in the Fall of 2020. While reading a book with my daughter one night, she asked why I couldn’t write a book and dedicate it to her one day. So I was inspired to try for her.

What was your inspiration for wanting to be a publishing kidlit author-illustrator?

I heard that you’d have a better chance of getting published if you were both author and illustrator. So I tried to do both. I never thought of becoming either of those because writing was always hard for me. I am an amigurumi artist, so designing characters isn’t so hard for me. But to create a full-colored spread out of a blank sheet was nerve-racking for me. But I just had to try for my daughter’s dedication someday.

You recently had your debut picture book come out in December of 2023. Congratulations! Can you tell us a bit about your journey to publication?


Thank you so much, Chelsea! There was a writing competition happening, and I decided to join. It was the Fall Writing Frenzy hosted by Kaitlyn Sanchez and Lydia Lukidis. I won, and my prize was a critique from an editor. During our meeting, I was surprised when she said she would like to work with me. That’s how my book found an editor. At the same time, I found an agent through a pitch event on Twitter/X. After several revisions, my book was acquired.

Staying positive in query trenches: What were the query trenches like and what were some things that helped you to keep going?

The query trenches were tough for me. I remember receiving my first rejection during the Christmas holidays. I cried. After months of rejections from agents, I felt very down. One didn’t like my storytelling style. Another didn’t like my art. I was wondering what I was capable of. What kept me going was encouragement from my family and kidlit friends. The writing community has been so supportive. There are those few who always comment, like, or share my posts. It means a lot to know I’m not alone out there struggling.

Your book was published with a traditional house, Macmillan Feiwel and Friends. While publishing with a traditional publishing house doesn’t always require literary representation, oftentimes, it helps. And in your case, you did have literary representation. Who are you currently agented by, and what agency?

My agent is Miranda Paul of Erin Murphy Literary Agency.

Did you know from the beginning that you wanted to pursue traditional publishing with the help of a literary agent, or did that decision take place later? Explain.

At first, I thought about self-publishing, but there was so much to learn. I also didn’t have the income to invest in printing books or hiring editors/designers. After enrolling in Storyteller Academy and learning more about publishing, I thought traditional publishing might be possible for me.

How did you end up with your agent & agency? Was it a cold query? A special query opportunity at a conference or other writing event/contest? Etc.

I found my agent through PBPitch on Twitter. I decided to pitch my story and art in October of 2021. I was excited to receive three hearts that day, one of those being from Miranda Paul. I queried her and was offered representation, which I accepted. Thankful for Debra Shumaker and PJ McIlvaine for hosting such a great event for the kidlit community.
For writers and illustrators who are querying now, can you share a little bit about what to expect for that agent call?

I was very nervous because this was my big chance. I made sure to have my list of questions. Justin Colon and Kelly Rice Schmitt were kind enough to put together a list of questions for agent calls and share it with the community.

What made you decide to sign with the agent/agency you’re with? And why is signing with the “right” agent better than not having an agent all? Explain.

I decided to sign with Miranda because she was nice and enthusiastic about my work. Everything is so subjective in the publishing world. You just hope for someone supportive and passionate about your work. It is better to have an agent so that she can help guide you in the submission process and fight for your work.

What advice do you have to am querying author-illustrators who are looking to go into traditional publishing?

Keep writing and illustrating. Display and submit work that you truly love and are most proud of. Keep learning and being the best version of yourself. Find yourself kidlit friends who will give you helpful feedback and are supportive of you through all the ups and downs.

For author-illustrators who might be on the fence about whether or not to query for literary representation vs. submitting directly to publishing houses, what are some pros and cons of both routes?

I know that most publishing houses accept submissions from agented creators only. But I know a few creators who have successfully landed deals on their own. I, too, found my editor before my agent. So it is possible.

There are many agents looking for author-illustrators, so you have a good chance with a good portfolio and writing samples. You do what you feel most comfortable with. Even though I had interest from my editor on my dummy, I still wanted an agent so that she could help me negotiate the contract and to help me with future work.

ROAD BUMPS AND CELEBRATIONS

What have been some of your favorite parts of the publishing journey? 

One of my favorite parts of the publishing journey was receiving my proofs. All of my works have been on screen or printed on regular copy paper, so seeing it big on nice glossy paper was an exciting moment for me.
Another favorite moment was seeing my children hold and read my book for the first time together. I’m grateful to be able to dedicate the book to them. Seeing all the friends and family who came to support me at my book events was heart-warming too. Grateful for all who have supported my book and journey!

-Those all sound like very exciting moments! Thanks for sharing those with us. And for sharing the picture. :)

What are some of the challenges you faced in your publishing journey? Explain.

Learning how to illustrate digitally was a challenge for me. Coloring is still difficult for me because I have a hard time seeing what colors work well together. I need to study and practice more. Writing has also been challenging. Finding ways to make your story or art unique is always tough. Just have to keep trying.

What has helped you the most to stay motivated and continue on the path?


Having wonderful family, kidlit friends, and critique partners help make the journey less frightening. Seeing other people’s work on social media has also been inspiring.

-Yes! They make the journey so much better.

In your words, could you share the importance of having diverse books with creators of marginalized backgrounds and voices for our young readers?

It is so important. I wish I had those diverse books growing up. The only one I knew was Yeh-Shen: A Cinderella Story from China by Ai-Ling Louie. I loved the book so much and was so touched when my college roommate got it for me as a gift. Diverse books are important so that other kids and adults have the opportunity to learn about other cultures. They are the windows, doors, and mirrors for the world.

BOOKS + EVENTS + PUBLISHING DEBUT

Your book has been out in the world for a little less than a year. How does it feel?!

I am very grateful for all the love and support I have received for A GIFT FOR NAI NAI. It is such a special feeling to see my book on shelves in bookstores, libraries, and readers’ homes. Thank you to everyone who has read, purchased, gifted, and reviewed my book.

What kind of response have you received from readers?

Readers have told me that A GIFT FOR NAI NAI reminds them of their loved ones, especially their grandmothers, giving them handmade gifts. They have said that my illustrations are so cute and that they love the Chinese writing characters dispersed throughout the book. A few readers have made Nai Nai’s hat too. So touching to see!

-How sweet!
Have you been able to host any local/or otherwise events? 

I was able to have storytime and book signings at Barnes and Noble at the Americana, Once Upon A Time Bookstore, Vroman’s Pasadena, and Bel Canto Books. I am grateful for everyone who came and was there in spirit!
Speaking of book events… this is your DEBUT book! How exciting. Could you tell us about your story and the inspiration behind it?

A GIFT FOR NAI NAI is about a girl who wants to make a special gift for her grandma’s birthday. I had not seen any picture books with crochet at the time, so that inspired me to create one. I used to crochet hats for my grandma, too, so this book is special to me.

-How special! I love that. And this picture is too cute.
Do you have a favorite illustration spread? If so, which one and why?

My favorite spread is when Nai Nai finds out the hat is for her all along, and she and Lyn Lyn hug each other. I love the sweet words Lyn Lyn has for Nai Nai. It is a blessing to have a grandma.

-So beautiful!
Any final words of wisdom that you’d like to share with our readers today?

Keep writing. Keep illustrating. Agents either didn’t like my writing or my illustrations. It was tough because it made me doubt myself. I wasn’t sure what I was capable of anymore. But the kidlit community and my family were encouraging. So, I kept writing and illustrating. It is important to find yourself supportive friends and critique partners who will help you do better. Welcome to the blog, Heather! It’s so nice to have you with us. And it feels wild to think we’re already in SEPTEMBER. Where has this year gone?

Today, I’d love to start by asking you the #1 question: What led you to the beautiful yet rugged terrain of publishing?

First of all, thank you so much for inviting me to be on your blog, Chelsea! I love the way you phrased this first question - publishing is beautiful, but rugged. Full of so much joy and difficulty, all rolled into one journey. A part of me has always wanted to write - poetry, novels, essays, short stories, science articles, you name it. I think that’s what it truly means to be a “writer” - one who must write, who can’t help but write. When I was about seven years old, I found a typewriter in my grandfather’s office. I would spend hours typing poorly spelled stories. And then I never stopped. Even when I was pursuing my career in science (which I think we will get to below), I never stopped writing. So, the natural outgrowth of that is…eventually, you want to publish some of the stuff you’ve written. There’s a longing to share your work with others, and this is true for any art.

In your interview bio, you shared a little bit about your fascinating line of work as a molecular microbiologist and history working with NASA. So, I’m itching to know… how did publishing enter the mix?

Yes, in high school I found microbiology. And I decided I wanted to be an epidemiologist (a scientist who studies pandemics and the spread of disease), so I entered college as a Biology major. Because I still loved literature and stories, I ended up taking as many upper-level English classes as I could manage and still major in Biology. But eventually, I had to make a choice - what will I pursue? At that age, I couldn’t handle the subjectivity of writing. I also wasn’t able to handle the rejection that comes in this industry. I needed my answers to either be correct or not. Math, science, and chemistry filled that need.

After graduating from college, I knew I wanted to work in a laboratory, which meant graduate work. While in graduate school, I learned how crucial writing and publishing is in that world also. There’s a saying in the sciences - “publish or perish” - meaning you need to continue to experiment, continue to write up your results, continue to tell elegant “stories” in order to advance. And I LOVED it! I loved the research, I loved the writing, I loved the experimental design.

But all through this, I still wrote other things. Short stories, poetry, and more. Like I said before, I just have to write.

Then I had kids. And read to them. A LOT. And I thought to myself, “I could do this. I could write a picture book.” Ha! That sparked many years of beginning to learn how complex picture books are, and how much I DIDN’T know about how to write them.

Are you still working as a molecular microbiologist? If so, how do you manage both literary deadlines and work schedules?

I worked as a scientist for a NASA contractor until last year. At that point, I made the decision to write full-time. It was becoming impossible to balance work for NASA, the schedules of three kids, and my publishing commitments while also trying to write and revise new work. But I did juggle all of those for at least five years before taking the “plunge” into full-time writing.

Any tips for readers who may be balancing a day job in addition to pursuing publication?

It’s hard. It really is. Up until recently, I wrote after the kids went to bed most evenings. And on the weekends, and at their sporting events, and in their school pick-up lines, and I’d listen to craft books while grocery shopping. I actually still do most of these things. But now, I am usually able to enjoy being with my family in the evenings instead of disappearing to write, which is wonderful because my oldest is not far away from college! I don’t want to miss a moment with any of them! My family inspires, challenges, and delights me! They, along with my close friends, are what push me to be a better writer.

Has writing been something you’ve always enjoyed, or did this happen later in life?

Yes! I’ve always been a writer. I was the kid who talked her friends into writing fan fiction at sleepovers or while we were playing at each other’s houses! I actually have a notebook with a complete book-length novel that my friend and I co-wrote at age 11!

-I love this! And can definitely relate myself. :)

Did you ever think you’d have a career in publishing? Or was it a total surprise?

This is a dream come true! As a kid, I dreamed of writing and publishing books. As a teenager, I dreamed of writing and publishing books. As an adult, I dreamed of writing and publishing books. But I never gave myself space to pursue that dream. It wasn’t “practical.” It wasn’t a “dependable job.” I will forever be grateful to my husband who not only gives me the space to create and market and promote my writing, but who also initially pushed me to learn more. “You’ve always talked about this,” he said. “Why not give it a shot?”

Speaking of a career in publishing… I’m curious to learn more about yours. You mentioned in your bio that you were in the query trenches and have had many close calls with agents and editors. Could you elaborate on this?

As you said in your first question, the publishing industry is beautiful and rugged - filled with incredible delights and crushing disappointments. I began querying my picture book manuscripts in the fall of 2021, after I’d been writing, learning, revising, and polishing for almost two years. A few of my critique partners already had agents, and one of their agents opened for paid critiques. I sent him one of my picture book manuscripts and left glowing comments and requested more of my work! My first full request…and NOT through traditional querying.

Ultimately, he ended up passing, but I was still very encouraged that an agent at a well-known, highly respected agency had been so intrigued by my writing.

-Fascinating! I love hearing stories like this. It's so interesting to see different ways people make connections and grow in the writing community.

Behind the scenes, while I was writing picture books, I was also working on a middle-grade manuscript. My second, actually. I had already written one middle-grade book just to prove to myself that I could finish something coherent and lengthy. And the first chapter of this second book was getting lots of interest from agents at conferences I attended. I finally finished that manuscript and began querying. I sent it to forty agents (over the course of six months)…and received eight full requests! I was blown away. Two asked for revise and resubmits once they read my manuscript. And…

…all of them ended up passing.

I heard on a podcast - I think it was Manuscript Academy’s podcast - that if you’re getting a lot of full requests and then passes, your submission package is working, but there’s probably something about the full manuscript that needs tweaking. So, I took a step back, worked with a developmental editor, and learned a ton about how to really write a novel.

-Oh my gosh. I LOVE the Manuscript Academy podcast. It's full of so much great info for new (and seasoned) writers!

In the meantime, I wrote another middle-grade novel and more picture books. I queried my picture books a little. Most were passes, but I got a few requests for more work! And then…more passes. At an SCBWI conference this spring, I pitched my work to an agent who was someone I really wanted to work with. Through a long series of events (and this answer’s already long enough!), she ended up offering me representation, I signed with her in early July, and we’re on submission with a few of my picture books!

I know this year you had your debut book published with Gnome Road Publishing—congratulations! That’s incredibly exciting and such a huge accomplishment, especially since you went at this without the aid of a literary agent. Could you tell us about how you ended up getting a book deal with the publisher?

Thanks so much, Chelsea! Trunk Goes Thunk! releases on October 8, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with this book and the whole publishing experience.

Gnome Road Publishing published its first round of books in the Spring of 2023. Since then, they have released four titles twice a year. Sandra Sutter, the publisher and lead editor at Gnome Road, conducted a series of interviews on blogs in 2021 and 2022. As I read about what she was looking to publish with her new press, I resonated with her focus on “re-readability.” She offered special submission opportunities on these blog interviews, one of which I was fortunate enough to win. I sent in a picture book manuscript (not Trunk), which Sandra took to her acquisitions team. Ultimately, they decided to pass, but I learned a little more about what she was looking for.

-This is great insight for readers, Heather. Thanks for sharing. There are really SO many ways for authors to go about finding a spot in publishing. You just really have to be open to putting yourself out there and making the connections.

When I wrote Trunk Goes Thunk! almost a year later, I sent it exclusively to Sandra. I wanted her to have first dibs on this story. I felt confident she would love it based on her wishlist and what I had learned from emailing with her about my other manuscript. Waiting for her response felt endless, but eventually, she wrote to say she wanted to buy it!

-Yay! I love happy endings. :)

Could you share your experience of how managing a book deal worked directly with the publisher without having representation?

It was very straightforward. Sandra and I met on Zoom to discuss her offer and any questions I might have, then she sent over her standard contract. She told me to take my time, read it through, and ask questions if I had them.

-Love this form of communication. It sound like she'd be great to work with.

Fortunately, I had made some connections in the publishing world, and a few of my author friends had already signed contracts with Gnome Road. I reached out to them to ask about their experiences, and every one of them had nothing but praise. Also, I have critique partners who, at that point, had already signed contracts with Big Five publishers. I asked them to take a look at the Gnome Road contract, and they gave it a green light also.

-So cool that you had friends with firsthand experience, who were able to help guide you and give feedback when you turned to them. Love this!

Were there any complications you ran into during this process- and if so, what was the outcome?

None whatsoever. Working with Sandra and Gnome Road has been smooth and absolutely delightful.

-We love to hear things like this!

Do you have any tips for readers who may be looking to submit directly to publishers versus querying for literary representation?

So often, I feel like this industry makes things out to be very black and white. For example, you either query for representation OR you submit to publishers. I did both simultaneously. I kept an extensive spreadsheet and tracked all my submissions, and (this is crucial) I only sent a manuscript to an agent or a publisher if I thought it would fit their list. And I tailored my query letters very specifically. Both to agents and publishers. Which is why I’ve only sent out about 60-70 agent queries total.

It takes a lot of research. Which takes a lot of time. But I sent a Southern-themed manuscript to Pelican Publishing and Peachtree Publishing, and got very nice passes from both (as in “this wasn’t a fit, but send us more of your work if you think it would fit our list”). I sent a different manuscript to other publishers. And a third to another set of publishers. All while querying those same manuscripts to agents. Ultimately, I wanted to secure representation for my long-term career, but I never thought these manuscripts were going to be the only ones I wrote, so if I happened to sell them along the way, GREAT!

Let’s talk publishing houses. What made you choose Gnome Road Publishing for your work? And did you submit to any other publishing houses or have any other competing offers?

As I mentioned in my story above, I only sent Trunk to Gnome Road. I started with Sandra because I really wanted to work with her and I thought this book would fit her list. Also, since I had not yet secured representation, I could only submit to publishers that accept unagented submissions. There are quite a few publishing houses that are well known that have open submissions (Charlesbridge, Chronicle, Holiday House), and I may have continued down my list if Gnome Road had passed…but thankfully, they didn’t!

However, because I hadn’t sent this manuscript to any agents, I couldn’t use Sandra’s offer as something to nudge agents with. Which meant I finalized the sale myself.

What kind of book deal were you offered? Was it a single sale, as in they bought one manuscript, or was it a multiple-book deal?

Gnome Road only offers single sale contracts…but there is more exciting news to come on that front that I hope to be able to share soon!

Do you have any fun WIP brewing? If so, what genre?

I’m currently working on revisions to a new picture book idea based on a little story I wrote for a contest. It’s morphing into something quite fun and magical.

I’m also revising my fourth complete middle-grade novel. I hope to have those edits done before the end of the year in case my agent and I decide to send it out on submission.

Finally, I have another middle-grade novel idea knocking around in my brain. It’s unlike anything I’ve written before - adventure, mystery, and a hefty dose of friendship. Well, the friendship part is a theme in all my work, but the other stuff is new. 🙂

You mentioned querying agents, so what ultimately made you decide not to go the representation route for your first book deal?

As I mentioned a little earlier, I sent Trunk to Sandra exclusively. Perhaps that may not have been the most “popular” or “acceptable” decision - some may argue that I should have simultaneously submitted it to agents - but I went with my gut. Again, if Sandra and Gnome Road had passed, I am sure I would have queried this manuscript broadly, but everything worked out in the end.

Do you plan to continue publishing without literary representation in the future or do you think you’re leaning toward acquiring representation down the line? Why or why not?

Definitely not! I’ve always been interested in securing literary representation for my career. I knew I wanted help with marketing, strategizing about the best manuscripts to send on submission, help identifying interested editors, and someone to help with the business side of the publishing industry (contract negotiation, royalties, foreign rights, etc.).

Which is why I’m so overjoyed that I’ve partnered with Kristen Terrette at Martin Literary Management! And we’re already out on submission with a few of my picture book manuscripts.

Let's talk a little about your experience with the educational market and work-for-hire. Could you shed more light on these interesting avenues of publishing and how one might approach entering one of these doors?

I first heard of the write-for-hire market from a fellow writer that I met through Twitter/X. She told me about an upcoming webinar in her SCBWI region that was all about breaking into the write-for-hire market. “You’re a scientist. You’d be great for this,” she said. And after I heard the presentation, I was definitely intrigued. The presenters did a fabulous job of breaking down the steps you need to take into manageable chunks - doing research on the publishers out there, preparing a submission package (VERY different from querying agents), etc.

So I wrote a few samples, worked on my resume (not at all the resume you’re thinking of, I can assure you, this one is SUPER fun!), and wrote a cover letter. I did my research on publishers and talked to some other writers I knew who had done some write-for-hire work. Then I sent out my package to four or five educational market publishers (Roarke, Abdo, and others)...and waited.

About one year later, I heard from RedLine Editorial, one of the places I’d sent my submission package. They asked if I wanted to write one book in a series of climate books they were putting together for North Star Editions. Since then, I’ve written four books for them!

-That's incredible! How very cool.

So, what has the work-for-hire experience been like for you? And what would you like to share about this with other readers who may be interested in dipping their toes into this side of publishing?


I really love the research involved in write-for-hire (everything I’ve written has been nonfiction), along with the specifications and structure from the publisher. It’s almost like putting together a puzzle - how to fit specific pieces into their places to make a beautiful picture.

What have been some of the most influential writing groups/conferences you’ve attended or been part of- and what specifically stood out to you about them?

I highly recommend two conferences - the ABLA Big Sur conference and the Rutgers Council on Children’s Literature One-to-One Plus conference. The first used to be held in both Big Sur, CA and on Cape Cod, MA. Now, I think they’ve condensed to one conference in February in Big Sur.

This conference gives you the opportunity to meet in small groups with ABLA agents, editors, and big name writers (Neil Shusterman, Rajani La Rocca, and more). I made some close writing friends at this conference, had a wonderful time swapping stories with full-time authors, and got real-time feedback from agents. It was great, but it is pricey.

-Wow, this is a TERRIFIC resource, Heather. Thanks so much for sharing this with our readers!

The RUCCL One-to-One Plus conference is held every October on the campus of Rutgers University in New Jersey, when the leaves are changing color. It’s gorgeous! Every mentee is guaranteed an HOUR of one on one feedback with an agent, editor, or author (mentors)! And you have another hour of roundtable discussion with six mentors and six mentees, meaning you get to meet six editors, agents, and authors! There’s plenty of time to talk and mingle at lunch, and the presentations are great. It is one full day. You have to send in an application to be considered. Applications for the fall are due the summer before.

-That sounds amazing!

I heard you got to give a presentation at your regional SCBWI conference- (very cool btw!) Which region are you a member of, and what was your presentation about?


Thank you! Yes, it was an honor to be able to present at the Spring 2023 conference for Southern Breeze. Our regional advisors asked for proposals for conference topics and I had just finished my first two write-for-hire books. I reached out to another author in my region, Heather Montgomery, who has written LOTS of children’s books - both for the trade and educational markets - and asked if she wanted to do a presentation on the write-for-hire market together. She agreed! It was the “Two Heathers” presentation, and we had a blast!

Later on, in November 2023, I ended up stepping in to present at a smaller Middle Grade intensive that we had for our Southern Breeze region. I talked about working with editors, and that presentation is also on my website HERE.

For people who are just starting out in this line of work… what suggestions/tips/tricks do you have on navigating the ever-changing and competitive waters of kidlit publishing? And what recommendations do you have on places where they can go to find information on the industry, improve craft, or find community?

For those starting out…welcome! And congratulations! You’re embarking on a difficult journey. It’s a long road, filled with detours, stop lights that don’t change for a LOOOONG time, potholes, and potentially dangerous paths (if you don’t stop to read the signs). But it has magnificent views! And the unbelievable joy, honor, and gift of writing for the best audience - KIDS!

My suggestion would be to have patience, persistence, and hold onto your sense of wonder. I think many people - myself included - make the mistake of thinking that breaking into publishing will be relatively easy. “I like writing. I made pretty good grades in English in college and high school.” But like any industry, craft, and profession, it takes time to learn, to practice, to build networks and community. It has helped me to think of this publishing process as not only a journey, but a career switch. I had to “go back to college” (take LOTS of courses through Highlights and the 12x12 picture book challenge and more, watch LOTS of webinars, attend LOTS of conferences, and write a LOT) for about four years before I could really enter the industry and find a “job” (i.e. sign a contract).

My suggestion would be to have patience, persistence, and hold onto your sense of wonder. What have been your favorite parts of kidlit publishing so far?

Talking with kids from schools all over the country! Interacting with readers is my FAVORITE! But…Seeing my book covers and holding my words in print were close seconds. 🙂

What are some challenges you’ve faced on this journey, and how were you able to overcome them?

About two years into this process of shifting careers, I became really disheartened. I had been writing and revising. I’d joined a critique group or two. I’d attended conferences and studied and read the books, and I felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere. Then I’d get on social media and try to engage, but I’d just see happy posts about book deals and agent signings and author visits. Don’t get me wrong, I was genuinely happy for these authors - they are my online community! But it was still hard.

One of the best things for me was setting boundaries on social media. And then taking the time that I had been spending scrolling and posting and taking the perfect picture or making the best Canva post…and using it to write. I wrote and wrote and wrote. All kinds of things in all kinds of genres. I played with words and did writing exercises and had FUN! I rediscovered my love of writing, for the joy of writing.

I also leaned into my family and friends, spending lots of time with them, NOT talking about the publishing industry. 🙂

It is amazing for me to consider that kids that I’ve never met, adults I’ve never met, will read my words. I can’t express how much it means to me. We’d love to hear about the book(s) you’ve published. Tell us all about it(them)!

Trunk Goes Thunk! Is my debut picture book! But I had two educational market books come out last August -

Climate Crisis in the Southeast (Focus Readers/North Star Editions) and Top Brands: Disney (Apex/North Star Editions). It was so much fun to write about Disney for that second book! And I had a blast with all the research for Climate Crisis.

I also have two more books releasing from Apex/North Star Editions this month, both in their Dog Breeds series. I got to write about Dachshunds and Staffordshire Bull Terriers and learned a ton about both of these unique and interesting breeds!

On July 8 of this year, The Haunted States of America released from Godwin Books/Macmillan. This anthology is a collection of 52 short stories by 52 different SCBWI authors representing every state, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia! Each spooky story has a gorgeous illustration by the remarkable illustrator, Solomon Hughes. It’s an honor to have my ghost story - “White Thing” - represent Alabama in this cool collection!

What was your inspiration for writing it(them), and what do you hope your story/stories will give your readers?

I like to say my books/stories are filled with science, wonder, and imagination. Nature also features strongly in all my writing. I love being out in the natural world. My corner of creation is lovely - rolling hills, deep rivers, temperate forests, high biodiversity, more caves than most of the rest of the world. It’s a pretty great place for inspiration. My family also inspires me. My kids challenge me, give me great ideas, and, of course, give me honest feedback. And my grandfather gave me the idea for my “White Thing” story!

Do you have any favorite book spreads? If so, which one(s) and why? Also, if you have any pictures to share, we’d love to see them!

YES!! My illustrators for Trunk Goes Thunk!, Chantelle and Burgen Thorne, are OUTSTANDING! They are incredibly talented. I was blown away by the care and beauty that they infused into every spread of this lovely book. But I confess, I do have a favorite. I absolutely love otters, and there’s one spread in the book that shows the log in summer and in winter…and - without knowing how much I adore otters! - they drew the cutest little guys sunning on the log!! Here it is:

Have you had a chance to do any book events since its launch? If so, we’d love to hear about it and see some photos if you have any and would like to share!

I have done a few book events! I did multiple Zoom and one in-person author visit last spring, where I spoke about my upcoming books and the science and inspiration that went into writing them. I’ve also participated in two different book festivals where I took pre-orders for my books and sold copies of my educational market books and some other anthologies that I’ve contributed to (adult market books).

The festivals are fun, though sometimes it feels like you’re running a lemonade stand. :) You sit and wait until someone “drives by,” and then you say “hello,” stand up, and try to engage. I enjoy meeting new people and hearing their stories so that part is fun! I’ve learned that you may not sell many books, but you’ll make connections, and I always have a sign-up sheet for my quarterly newsletter.

-I love that analogy.
If applicable- What has been your favorite part of author events?

I love author visits ‘cause you get to interact with KIDS! If you can’t tell, I really enjoy being around kids. They ask great questions, they won’t sugar-coat their feedback, and they’re so passionate about what they like. I can’t wait to keep booking more and more of these events!

If applicable- What kind of events have you been able to host, and how were the events arranged? Did you reach out directly? If so, how? (Email? Phone call? etc.) And what places have you been able to visit? (Farmer’s Markets/Libraries/Schools/Bookstores, ETC.)?

I’ve participated in book festivals, done one in-person author visit, multiple Zoom author visits, and been a panelist for a few different events. For two of these, I was contacted by someone I had met at another event. They told me about the book festival or author visit they wanted me to do and asked if I was interested. For all the others, I had to reach out via phone or email (I’ve done both), explain who I am and about my book, and ask if they are interested. I think calling bookstores works better because you can learn the person’s name and explain more about yourself. Then, you can follow up with an email.

Coming up in the next few months, I’ll be participating in the Mississippi Book Festival in Jackson in September, and I have multiple book signings/story times booked in October!

Do you have any final words of wisdom you’d like to share with readers today that you wish you had known when you first started pursuing publication?

I’m so grateful to be writing books for kids and so thankful to be talking to you, Chelsea! I wish I had known to slow down and not be in a rush to be published. I wish I had allowed myself to “play,” to experiment, earlier. I eventually got to that point, but it took a little while.

THE BEGINNING: ROAD TO PUBLISHING

Welcome, Ha Dinh! It’s so nice to have you with us today.  I love having educators on the blog because I feel like they have a special connection to the world of kids. Which is especially great when writing kidlit. Speaking of which…

The first question I love asking my guests is how they landed here in the world of publishing for children. How and when did your publishing journey begin?

First and foremost, thank you so much, Chelsea, for having me and allowing me to share my stories with you and your audience! I have always wanted to be a Children’s book author since I was a kid but never seriously pursued it until 2020 when my beloved mom passed away. I realized then that if I didn’t write the stories that were inspired by my childhood and my culture, they would be lost for my children and all the children who may also need them.

Once I wrote the draft of my debut picture book, WHERE WILDFLOWERS GROW, I worked on revising and editing it for a year before entering the #PBPitch Contest on Twitter, where I luckily found my agent and editor for the book.

Have you always enjoyed writing and/or reading?

Growing up, I loved journaling and writing. But since I came to America when I was 5 years old and didn’t know English, learning the language was a daily challenge for me. Reading allowed me to learn English and reading picture books encouraged me to write my own stories.

Do you think your role as an educator influenced/influences your inspiration for writing and publishing?


I know in my heart that being an educator propelled me to my dream as an author. While I always loved writing, I also saw the lack of Vietnamese-American representation and stories in the children’s book space. As an educator, I knew that that was a need that I could meet for our children.

Can you walk us through some of the stages of how you got your footing in kidlit?

Starting a new journey can be daunting with so much uncertainty. I was so nervous since I didn’t know anyone personally who had been traditionally published. However, through various online contests including #PBChat, #PBPitch, and #50PreciousWords Contest and SCBWI, I have been blessed to have met many encouraging fellow creators and industry professionals, who allowed me to share my work, hone my craft, and supported me in my journey.

ROUTES TO PUBLISHING & CHALLENGES

I know you’re represented by Belcastro Literary Agency, which tells me that you were interested in going the traditional route to publication rather than independent. For some of our readers who are considering which route to take (and what the differences are), could you share a little bit about how these paths differ and why you chose to go the traditional route?

With teaching full-time, raising young children, and running my teaching resource online business, my time for writing and publishing was very limited when I started my journey. Therefore, I knew that the traditional route was best for me as it has allowed me to stay creative, and my wonderful agent has been amazing at handling more of the business side for me.

Any words of wisdom or advice you’d like to share with writers and/or illustrators who are trying to decide what course to take?

I think the best advice is to follow your heart and take the route that you feel is best for you.

What have been some of the challenges you’ve faced on your publishing journey, and how have you been able to endure/overcome them?

Rejection is such a big part of publishing, and while it’s something that we all can expect as creators, it still stings. However, I have learned that rejection is redirection and when our work lands in the right hands, all the heartache was all worth it even if it took some time to find the right match.

Do you have any favorite writing resources, tips, or organizations that have helped you to stay on the path?


My favorite tip is to continue to be open to inspiration. Sometimes a small conversation or a mention of a memory from childhood can spur into an entire story for me. When that happens, I feel like the story writes itself in my head and I’m just capturing it with my words.

eDUCATIONAL RESOURCES: KIDS AND FAMILY

We touched briefly on your educational background. Could you tell us more about that? How long have you been teaching, and what specifically (age range/subjects) do you teach?

After receiving my bachelor's degree in English and Humanities from the University of Louisville, I received a Master of Art in Teaching degree in Early Elementary Education. In addition to wanting to be an author, I always wanted to be the kind of teacher that I was so blessed to have had growing up. I taught for three years in second grade and 13 years in first grade. After 16 years of teaching, I felt it was the right time for me to dedicate myself to writing and creating educational resources full-time.

Speaking of education… let’s talk about your teaching blog, Happy Days in First Grade. When did you first launch your teaching blog, and where did you find the inspiration for it?

When I started teaching in 2007, I found myself scouring the internet for hours at home looking for teaching resources for my classroom. After years of searching, I decided to create what I needed for my classroom instead and began sharing what I made with other teachers online. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a business that has allowed me to support myself, my family, and my community of elementary educators who love finding new, innovative, and engaging ways to reach and teach their students.

Could you tell us a little bit about the resources you offer there and who they are for?

I create teaching resources mostly for the primary grades (kindergarten, first grade, and second grade). From core subjects to classroom decorations to organizational tools for teachers to STEM to Makerspace teaching materials and more, my resources are created to help students have fun while learning and growing.

BOOKS AND REPRESENTATION

We’ve arrived at the book portion of the interview. Hooray! Tell us about your books. 

My debut picture, WHERE WILDFLOWERS GROW, was inspired by my memories of living and leaving a refugee camp in the Philippines in 1989 for America after my family and I had moved from Vietnam. While it is an immigration story, it is also a story of friendship, joy, and finding hope in new beginnings no matter where we are. WHERE WILDFLOWERS GROW was published in 2023 by Waterbrook & Multnomah, an imprint of Penguin Random House and edited by Bunmi Ishola.

My second book, THE JADE BRACELET, is based on a jade bracelet that my late mom gifted me when I was seven years old. Similar to my feelings toward the bracelet at the time, the main character loves her mom but would rather blend in at school and wear the same colorful and sparkling bracelet that her friends wear at school instead. When Picture Day with the bracelet turned into a big ordeal, the main character has to decide if she wants to keep the bracelet or buy a new one. It is a book on understanding and appreciating one’s own family traditions while still holding onto one’s identity. The book is slated to be released April 2025 by Random House Studio and was edited by the Maria Modugno.

My third book, THE MOON LANTERN, follows Huy, a Vietnamese-American boy who wants to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with his own lantern. As other children make traditional star lanterns for the holiday, Huy makes one to honor the moon instead. This story introduces readers to this wonderful festival that is celebrated by numerous Asian countries while also sharing the mythical tale of a poor Vietnamese woodcutter and his magical banyan tree that is at the heart of the festival.

Writing is such a personal thing. And it can be vulnerable, too. Which is, I think, a big part of what makes books so beautiful and important. At its core… writing is an expression of oneself. Can you tell us… what does each story mean to you personally? And what do you hope it will offer readers?

Each story means so much to me and was written with so much reflection and inspiration from my childhood memories. WHERE WILDFLOWERS GROW reminds me of finding hope in new beginnings, THE JADE BRACELET reminds me to hold onto family traditions as treasured gifts, and THE MOON LANTERN reminds me of finding beauty in traditions while also making them uniquely our own.

In recent times, we’ve seen a huge effort in today’s society to help boost previously underrepresented voices and stories and give them the space they deserve. In your interview application, you talked about Vietnamese American culture and how your stories offer representation that allows young readers to connect to characters who are experiencing similar emotions and events while also learning more about experiences that they may not be familiar with. Can you talk in more detail about this?

While there is more Vietnamese American representation in Children’s literature in the last 5 years, there are still so many more Vietnamese American stories to tell, characters to write, and perspectives to share. I hope that with the addition of my books and those of other Vietnamese American authors, libraries across the country will be filled with more representation for our community and children everywhere.

Hello, writing friends, and welcome back to Chelsea’s World of Books blog. Can you believe we’re in the new year ALREADY? And to get things started, we’re diving into 2024 with a very special guest; Children’s Book Author of one of our favorites, FREAKY, FUNKY FISH, Debra Shumaker!

She is the author of the nonfiction rhyming FREAKY, FUNKY FISH, and PECULIAR PRIMATES (Running Press Kids, 2021 & 2022), a social-emotional learning book, TELL SOMEONE (Albert Whitman, 2021), and the upcoming WIND IS (Kids Can Press, 2024). Debra is also the co-host of #PBPitch, a Twitter pitch party for picture books held every February, June, and October. THE SPARK THAT STARTED IT ALL

Debra, I can’t tell you how thrilled I was to find your name among the many stuffed in my submissions box for the 2024 Feature Interview lineup. Being a librarian and kidlit writer myself, I’ve had and witnessed many delightful read-alouds of your stories. Something that I love about your writing style is how you blend education with fun- and, to top it all off, you incorporate rhyme! Which is something that I think only the real wizardly kidlit writers of the world can successfully tame. But before I go off on a tangent on your books (I promise we’ll circle back to it), I’d love to start our conversation today by asking how you landed in the world of children’s publishing. What was “the spark that started it all?”

First, thank you so much for your kind words! I love hearing that read-alouds with my books are delightful! As far as “the spark,” as many writers can relate, I’ve always loved reading and had the “some day” dream of writing a novel. When I married and had kids, I took a step back from my corporate job and became a stay-at-home Mom. I took the kids to the library several times a week, checking out dozens of picture books. And I was floored. I didn’t remember picture books like those when I was a kid. And I fell in love with picture books. I decided that I was going to figure out how to be a part of the picture book creation. My kids are in their upper teens and twenties now, so it took a while, but I figured it out!

Can you tell us a little bit about what kinds of stories you write and why you write them?

I write both fiction and nonfiction picture books. So far, I’ve had more success with my nonfiction books. But I write whatever strikes my fancy. Many ideas come from some random fact that I read about or some emotions I’m feeling—wonder, joy, fear, sadness, or a complicated mixture—and want to write a story to give a place for kids to either find that wonder or explore their complicated feelings, too. And sometimes, I write a story because an editor asked for a specific story.

I understand that you grew up on a small farm with eight siblings, and you’ve always loved reading. Can you tell us a little more about your childhood experiences with books and maybe share some of your favorites?

Growing up, as I did, we didn’t have a lot of money. But my Dad loved reading, so somehow, we always had books in our house, mostly from rummage sales or from people who knew we had a big family and wanted to pass down books from their family. I also loved Library Day and Scholastic Book Fairs. I don’t remember reading too many picture books, but I remember reading lots of easy readers. My favorite were Disney Encyclopedias. I spent hours and hours reading those!

I mentioned before that I’m a librarian… and I noticed on your website that your favorite day of each week as a young girl was “library day” at school. Which makes me so happy- mine was too! Can you tell us a little bit about the magic you experienced as a young girl in the library and what memories stand out most to you to this day?

As I mentioned, money was tight. Also, there were no bookstores nearby. I depended on Library Day during the school year and the Book Mobile (that we would bike to in the summer) to have new books to read. I remember the awe of walking up and down the bookshelves and picking as many as I could fit in my arms. I loved horses and probably read every horse book the library and Book Mobile had.


Now we’ve talked about the past… let’s fast-forward a little. Before becoming a children’s book author, what was life like? What kind of work did you do? And what were the events that led to the switch to writing as a career?

My first career out of college was as a Registered Dietitian for a nursing home. I eventually moved on to training healthcare software to staff in nursing homes, then staff development training for a healthcare software company. Not publishing-related at all. But sometimes, I took writing classes at community colleges because I dreamed of writing a novel someday. After having kids, becoming a stay-at-home Mom, and taking my boys to the library, the spark was ignited, as I noted in the first question. It took me a few years to call myself a writer, and a lot more years to finally get that byline in a magazine, and many more years before getting my name on a book!

THE PROCESS: QUERYING AGENTS/SUBMITTING TO PUBLISHING HOUSES

What was the publishing process like for you? Can you share a little about your experience with querying agents? When did you begin your publishing journey? When/how did you find your agent agent/agency match? 

The publishing process was very long. I started writing for kids in 2007, but with three boys in 3 ½ years, very sporadically. Once they started school, I started being more intentional in finding time to write. At first I wrote both picture books and magazine articles and did find success with a few articles in Boys’ Quest, Fun for Kidz, and Spider. By 2011, I had joined SCBWI and started seriously submitting picture books to editors then agents. Participating in challenges like PiBoIdMo (Picture Book Idea Month) and 12 x 12 greatly improved my writing and my understanding of publishing. Around 2015, I finally started getting champagne rejections and requests for R&Rs (revise and resubmits), but didn’t connect with an agent until 2017. That was Natascha Morris with BookEnds Literary. I submitted one of my fiction stories to her through the normal query process. She loved it and asked for a few more, then offered representation. (After she sold my first two books, she did leave BookEnds. I am now repped by James McGowan with BookEnds.)

Once you signed with your agent/agency, what was the submission process like?

The benefit to having an agent is to have the doors to bigger publishers open up. But having an agent also meant that every story I wrote did not necessarily go on sub. She had to feel confident in it, too. But I loved being able to put all my focus on my writing instead of researching agents or houses that took unsolicited subs.

How long did it take to receive your first book deal?

I first signed with Natascha in July of 2017. After a few revisions, she subbed that first story widely. I had several R&Rs, and it went to acquisitions to around 4 or 5 houses, but we never sold that book. It was 18 months and four other manuscript submissions later before we finally found an editor who gave me a YES. And that was for FREAKY, FUNKY FISH in January of 2019.

RESOURCES & WORDS OF ADVICE

The beginning stages of the writing journey is a very tender time. It’s a time for learning and growth. Like everything in life, real growth comes through patience and trial and error. And it can be difficult. Rejections sting. Waiting is hard. But, the further along you go, the stronger you get and the more you learn. What has been your biggest challenge in the kidlit publishing arena, and how have you been able to overcome it?

Rejection is hard. The one thing writers can’t control is agents or editors deciding to take on your book. One thing I could control was to continue to work on my craft and to continue to write and submit. I continually reminded myself that agents and editors were rejecting my stories, not me personally.

If you could share a piece of advice with newly aspiring authors or illustrators, what would it be?

I tell every aspiring picture book author to type up the text of picture books they love. (And that have been published in the last few years.) It’s the best way to get a feel for voice, pacing, page turns, and so much more. By doing this, it will become more innate when they write. Plus, if the book they are typing up has both an author and an illustrator, aspiring authors can get a better idea of how the manuscript looked when it was bought as a text-only document. Odds are, there was a lot of room left for the illustrator. I’ve typed up more than 300 books since 2015, and I continue to do so on a regular basis. My first drafts have improved so much because of this exercise.

Speaking of words of advice… let’s talk a little bit about writing community and resources. What are some of the best resources you were able to find when you started down the road to kidlit publishing?

In my first few years of writing, I didn’t know where to get ideas. I only had two manuscripts that I worked on over and over again. Thankfully, I stumbled upon Tara Lazar’s PiBoIdMo (Picture Book Idea Month) which has now morphed into StoryStorm that happens every January. It trained my brain to always be on alert for ideas, and now I have more than I can handle. Shortly after my first PiBoIdMo, I found Julie Hedlund’s 12x12. This was back when there weren’t agent submission opportunities and “levels”, just a community of writers attempting to write 12 picture book drafts in 12 months. Being a part of that community was priceless. The KidLit411 website is an amazing resource for KidLit writers.

Since we’re discussing helpful resources, I’d like to add the importance of having a strong writing community. Making connections is one of the best things a new writer or illustrator can do. Not only do you learn from each other… but you’re able to support and lift one another up. You can share and celebrate good news- and share and comfort hard news. It’s crucial for your mental health as a creator to have your clan of supporters around you- who both understand what it’s like and appreciate your continued efforts. Where are some places you’d recommend going to find that “kidlit community”?

Besides StoryStorm and 12x12, I love the KidLit411 Community on Facebook. Facebook has many great writing groups for community. But I also highly recommend finding a critique group, or two, or three, either in-person or online. I belong to four! The KidLit 411 website offers a place to find critique partners. And join SCBWI. When you join the national organization, you will get placed in a regional chapter. Conferences are an amazing way to meet fellow creators. Attending my regional conference is how I found my in-person critique group.

Another thing I think can really help to keep a creator’s creative juices flowing and inspired is participating in kidlit events. There are so many great contests out there! One of them is one that you co-host. Can you tell us a little bit about how you started #PBPitch events on Twitter/X, what they are, and what their intended purpose is?

Ah, #PBPitch. I’m so proud of it. It started back in 2015. I had just joined Twitter because in various KidLit groups on Facebook, I kept hearing about #PitMad, which was a pitch party for books for all ages. (For pitch parties, creators post a pitch for a completed manuscript with the corresponding hashtag, and if an agent or editor “hearts” it, it’s an invitation to submit the manuscript.) In March 2015, I participated in my first #PitMad, and there seemed to be very little love for picture books that day. Mandy Yates posted in one of the FB groups that someone should start one for just picture books. I responded that I had no idea what I was doing but would help. As did PJ McIlvaine. And before we knew it, the three of us created #PBPitch and hosted our first one a few months later. We had no idea if anyone would tweet or if any agent or editor would stop by, but they did! We’ve held it three times a year ever since. Each one has resulted in at least one successful agent match or book deal. We have numerous success stories on our website (pbpitch.weebly.com), and I’m sure many more have happened that we just aren’t aware of.

PREPPING FOR DEBUT AUTHOR BOOK LAUNCH: ORGANIZING VISITS/EVENTS: SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES, BOOK SIGNINGS

Okay, so now we have an agent, a book deal, and a launch date. Yay! Now what? Now it’s time to SELL the book. Can you tell us about your experience in preparing for your debut book launch and creating your author brand? What worked best? What didn’t? And why?

My debut, FREAKY, FUNKY FISH: ODD FACTS ABOUT FASCINATING FISH, came out in May 2021 when the world was still largely shut down due to the pandemic. I was able to have a launch outside of my local indie, Scrawl Books, but the weather was quite windy and chilly and sparsely attended. However, in getting ready for my debut, I joined a co-marketing group called PB Debut Troupe 21. Fourteen of us creators had debuts coming out that year, and we shared our joy, commiserated in the frustrations, helped boost each other’s books on social media, and wrote reviews. I’m still good friends with those creators. I highly recommend debuts join or create a co-marketing group!

A great way to boost your brand and share your story with others is by hosting author visits. Can you tell us about some of the visits you’ve hosted? How do you conduct your author visits? How long are they? Do you charge an author fee? Are you the one organizing them, or is it your agent/publisher? If you’re the one organizing, how do you go about reaching out about scheduling your visit?

Occasionally, a bookstore has reached out to my publisher for an author event, but that’s only been once or twice. So, 99% of the time, I am doing the outreach to bookstores, schools, and libraries. For readings at bookstores, I do not charge a fee, but for programs at libraries and schools, I do. For Author Visits at schools, I do 3 - 4 presentations in one day–I don’t only read my book and talk about being an author, I have presentations connected to curriculum. To promote my Author Visits, I’ve attended my state’s librarian conferences to connect with librarians. I’ve also sent out postcards to local schools. I did about six visits last year and loved them, and hope to do more!

What has been the response to the author visits? What has been your favorite part? What has been their favorite part?

My favorite part is being with the kids and exciting them about writing, reading, and science. Hearing them laugh about the facts in my book is priceless. And seeing their eyes light up because they are meeting a real, live author just warms my heart. Their favorite part is probably getting out of regular class, LOL. But I do think many of them love meeting someone who wrote the words in a book they read or heard.

THE BOOKS! RHYME, EDUCATION & HEART

Okay, I promised we’d circle back- and here we are. We’ve finally arrived at my favorite part of the interview- THE BOOKS! 

As I mentioned earlier, I’m a big fan of your stories. I love learning, and your books FREAKY, FUNKY FISH, and PECULIAR PRIMATES are such inventive ways to spread knowledge. And your story TELL SOMEONE is just beautiful. But, enough about how much I love your work. I’d love to hear from YOU about each of your books. We touched on the types of books you write and why briefly earlier, but now I want to dig a little deeper. How did each of your stories come to be? What was the inspiration behind them? And what do you hope each story will give your reader?

For my debut, FREAKY, FUNKY FISH, I have to thank my first agent. I had been writing picture book biographies that just weren’t selling. She encouraged me to try something different. Since I love all nonfiction, I decided to try my hand at a science-y picture book and read some rhyming ones about bugs, water, squirrels, etc. I challenged myself to write one about a different animal. I recalled some research I had done about fish for a different fiction manuscript I wrote and remembered how strange some fish were. And wa-la, an idea was born.

For TELL SOMEONE, an editor asked my first agent if she had a writer who would like to try writing a story encouraging kids to talk about their feelings since Albert Whitman wanted to have one on their list. Natascha asked me. My gut reaction was “No,” as I had never written anything “on assignment,” but I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and said I would try. A few months later, I had a contract.

After we were in the final stages of FREAKY, FUNKY FISH, I decided to write a companion book about birds, which I titled BIZARRE BIRDS. Running Press Kids felt there were too many picture books about birds and asked if I’d be interested in writing one about primates, so I did!


For my science books, I hope kids are fascinated by the diversity of our world and are inspired to do what they can to preserve it. For TELL SOMEONE, I hope kids are encouraged to talk about their feelings in both good times and hard times. Mental health is important.

There’s a fun musicality that you use in your writing that truly puts the “fun” into “fun facts,” and at the same time, it’s funny. Heart, humor, and education are my favorite combination. And, somehow, you managed to add RHYME into the mix?! Possibly proving that you’re a magician? (Are you a magician?) Can you tell us what inspired you to write your stories in rhyme and what that process looked/felt like?

I love rhyme. My first publication ever was a rhyming poem about a snail who ate a nail in my 3rd-grade newsletter. I frequently wrote “odes” for various occasions growing up, for fun, so I think my debut was destined to rhyme, LOL. When I started writing picture books, I wrote several fiction/concept stories that rhymed but never sold. Some books seem to work better in rhyme, and for both the fish and primates books, I felt rhyme gave them another hook vs. just a list of strange animal adaptations. It’s a lot of work but so much fun, like setting a puzzle.

Did you have anyone try to discourage you from writing in rhyme- and if so, how did you respond?

No, no one discouraged me. I understand meter and know that rhyme is more than just counting syllables and using rhyming words at the end of two lines, so as I revise, I know the rhyme will read smoothly. I won’t quit until it does.

Okay, we’ve talked about rhyme. Now, let’s talk about illustration. Can you tell us about how you ended up with your illustrators and what your first thoughts were?

For both publishers, as is typical in traditional publishing, Running Press Kids and Albert Whitman found the illustrators. For Albert Whitman, the editor and art director, paired my text with Tristan’s art for the pitch at the acquisitions meeting, which was different from Running Press Kids. With them, FREAKY, FUNKY FISH was acquired first, then it took over ten months for them to find an illustrator.

I was absolutely thrilled with both Claire and Tristan once they were selected. Their portfolios were amazing.


Did you envision your characters and stories in a similar way to how they were illustrated?

For FREAKY, FUNKY FISH, I really didn’t have any vision in my head as I had seen so many photos of the fish as I was researching and writing it that I didn’t really give a thought to how they would look illustrated. But seeing Claire’s sketches for the first time was amazing—I loved the personalities she gave all the various fish!

For TELL SOMEONE, I hoped the art would depict various and diverse kids in the different scenarios, so Tristan’s art was in line with what I envisioned. But I was still amazed. His art is so sweet, I want to hug each child in that book.

Do you have a favorite spread from each book?

While I love so much about the illustrations in all three books, my favorite spread in FREAKY, FUNKY FISH is the one with the hammerhead shark and parrotfish. I love Claire’s colors and humor.

For PECULIAR PRIMATES, I love the nighttime scenes–the various primates are so adorable and huggable in that spread!

For TELL SOMEONE, my favorite page is the girl on the first day of school. Tristan’s perspective on this page really emphasizes the girl’s nervousness.
And… you have a new book coming out this Fall. Can you tell us a little bit about that one?

Yes, I do, and I’m so excited about it! WIND IS A DANCE, illustrated by the fabulous Josée Bisaillon, comes out with Kids Can Press on October 1, 2024. This book is a lyrical ode to the wind. I use metaphors to describe various winds we experience—from a ruffling, fluffing breeze to a rumbling, tumbling derecho. I’ve recently seen the colored sketches, and Josée’s art is SO stunning. I cannot wait for the world to see it!

If you could send your past self any piece of writerly advice, what would it be?

Be prepared for the long haul. Getting published is so, so hard, but absolutely worth it.

What’s one last message/piece of advice you’d like to impart to your readers?

If you are a writer and you want to be published, don’t give up. It may take more than 10 years, like it did for me. Work hard on craft and write new stories. Every manuscript you write will likely not get published. I wrote dozens of first drafts and about fifteen polished picture books before my first one was acquired. But I learned something from each manuscript I wrote, not one was a wasted effort.

AUGUST 2023 FEATURE INTERVIEW WITH CHILDREN’S AUTHOR, JESS TOWNES, conducted by Chelsea dicicco

Author Bio   Jess Townes is the author of several picture books, including the forthcoming Sometimes I Cry. A lifelong storyteller, Jess has worked in public education, non-profit development, birth, and lactation services, as a freelance writer and actress, and currently works as a bookseller at Main Street Books in St. Charles, Missouri, but her favorite part of any job is the connections she builds with other people. She believes there is no better path to those connections than through our stories. Jess lives outside St. Louis with her husband, two teenagers, and two black cats.

Beginnings

It's time for another great FEATURE INTERVIEW. Today, we're welcoming guest Jess Townes to the blog. It’s such a pleasure to have you with us, Jess! I loved learning about your colorful and varied work experiences as a doula and advocate for Spanish speakers in the public school district as well as your history with nonprofit fundraising, among other cool things. So, tell me, what was the series of events that landed you here in the wonderful land of children’s book writing?
 
There's an expression about endings, I think it originated with Aristotle, that says they should be "surprising, but inevitable," and that's sort of how I feel about landing in the world of children's literature. I did not grow up wanting to become an author. I'm not sure it ever made my list of what I wanted to be when I grew up, and that list was long and varied, from journalist to Rockette to the first female Catholic priest (for the record, I wasn't even Catholic). Yet, I fell in love with children's books at a very young age and never fell out of love long past the age that our culture dictates I should have. I've always been a storyteller, and most of my work has involved advocacy for children, so in a way, though it was a surprise, it was perhaps inevitable that I eventually paired my love for story and my connection with children in this way. 

I saw on your author’s website that you memorized Richard Scarry’s illustrations. So, I’m guessing books played a large part in your young childhood. Can you tell us more about some of your favorite childhood book memories and how they influenced you then or maybe still influence you today? Books were a foundational part of my childhood. In early elementary school, I was completely obsessed with The Babysitters Club. I loved and admired all of them. Kristy's leadership, Claudia's artistic talent, Maryanne's empathy, and Stacey's ability to adapt to change. They felt like friends to me, and when I was going through difficult moments in my own life, I turned to them for comfort and consistency. As I got a little older, I discovered Judy Blume, and her books were a revelation. She wrote things that nobody talked about but everyone experienced, and reading them stripped away shame and self-doubt. I believe she shaped the future of children's literature through her vulnerability, and so many of the books I love and sell as a bookseller today might not have ever been published had she not paved the path for them. Another thing I wanted to talk with you about is your day job! I remember you mentioning that you work as a bookseller at an independent bookstore in St. Charles, Missouri (which is so cool)! It seems like a very fitting job for someone who enjoys reading and writing. I work in a library, and I love being surrounded by books and book lovers. I imagine you do too! Can you tell us a little more about the bookstore where you work and what it’s like working there? I love my job at Main Street Books! We are located on a historic cobblestone street in St. Charles, Missouri, where many of the buildings are over two hundred years old. It's a vibrant tourism location that hosts multiple festivals every year, from a floral festival in May to Halloween to Christmas. The street is charming, and you really get to know your neighbor merchants. We are a general interest bookstore, which means we have a little bit of everything, and our staff reads across all genres. I love getting to know our local readers as well as meet people from all over the country who are visiting. Working as a bookseller gives me a behind-the-scenes peek at the other side of publishing, which I find helpful in understanding the industry. And it's always so exciting when I get the chance to sell one of my writer friend's books!

Books & Writing

When it comes to your own writing… do you ever host storytimes or book signings of your books where you work?

Yes, I launched both of my first books with a signing/storytime at Main Street Books. It's my bookish home, so it feels right to start there. 

Speaking of your books… let's talk more about those! I know you have Spellbound, which came out in January 2022; Groundhog Gets it Wrong, which came out in January 2023; and your next book, Sometimes I Cry, is coming out THIS Fall! Can you tell us about your newest book? 

Sometimes I Cry is definitely the most vulnerable of the books I've published so far. It's an exploration of all the different kinds of moments in life that can move us to tears, and as an easy crier myself, it hits very close to home. Growing up, I sometimes felt ashamed or embarrassed by how easily I cried (I'm that person that cries during commercials, for example), but once I had my own kids, it became important to me to model crying as a normal, healthy part of being human in a complex world. I started to notice the ways that boys, in particular, were discouraged from crying and wondered what our world would look like if men were able to access and express their full range of emotions in healthy ways. This book was born in my part from my desire to help create that world, and I really hope young readers see themselves on its pages. 

So now that we've wandered into the territory of one of my all-time favorite topics- books- I'd love to hear a little more in-depth of the behind-the-scenes of the creation of these stories. Can you share a little about how your books were born? What was the inspiration behind them?

Spellbound was inspired by my work as a doula. I had the privilege of watching many families welcome a new baby into their homes and the varied reactions of the existing children. While some became immediate caregivers, others took some time to adjust to a new sibling, and I wanted to honor that reality in a playful but honest way. Groundhog Gets It Wrong was inspired by a winter in my region where the groundhog called for an early spring, and it actually came true! It made me wonder how often this rodent gets it right, which got me thinking about making mistakes and the aftermath of those mistakes. 

Book Publishing Territory & Timeline

I know I have a lot of readers who are at different stages of writing and publishing. Some are just starting out with finding a home in the writing community and joining their first critique groups. Others are already a part of the writing community and now have polished manuscripts that they are querying to find an agent. Some are now agented but don't yet have book deals. And others may be agented with multiple book deals. So, I like to ask questions that help give more information about each stage.
 I'll start with the beginner questions.

When you first started writing, can you tell us how/where you discovered your writing community? Were there any groups or things that helped, in particular?

There were two groups in particular that were an enormous help to me as a beginner children's writer - the 12 x 12 Picture Book Challenge and SCBWI. I met my first critique group through SCBWI, and they remain close friends and writing partners to this day. I attended workshops and conferences through SCBWI, eventually becoming a Co-RA of my local region. It's hard to imagine my publishing journey without this organization that I have learned so much from. Likewise, 12 x 12 continues to be a huge part of my writing life! The program helped me challenge myself to write drafts and practice craft on manuscripts that I knew would never be published, which for me, is an essential part of the process. But more importantly, I meet writers through this community that understand the ups and downs of the publishing journey and the specificity of picture book writing. I currently serve as a Critique Ninja for 12 x 12, and I am honored to give back to a community that has given me so much. 
 
From the time you first started swapping manuscripts and getting feedback on your work, how long did it take you to start querying agents, and what was that process like?

It took me a long time to be ready to swap manuscripts and seek feedback on my work. I wrote privately for a couple of years before even joining SCBWI and learning about critique groups. Once I did have those groups in place, I started querying agents about six months later and was fortunate to sign with my agent very quickly after that.
 
Once you started querying, how long did it take you to find your agent match?

I received an offer to revise and resubmit from my current agent within a month of querying agents, and I ended up signing with her a few months after that. 
 
Once you found your agent, how long did it take to get your first book deal?

Much longer! I was with my agent about a year and a half before we had our first offer. We had a couple of other manuscripts go through acquisitions more than once, so I got a lot of experience in getting oh-so-close to a deal but not quite crossing the finish line. This is a part of the process even after multiple book deals. Each time on submission is like starting over. 

Discouragements, Set-backs, Words of Wisdom

We've gone over the timeline. Now let's talk a little bit about the in-betweens.
Were there any points throughout your publishing career that you felt discouraged? If so, what/who helped you overcome it?

Yes, of course. So much of publishing is outside our control, and keep in mind that my own publishing timeline fell in the middle of a global pandemic. There has been near constant uncertainty about everything from shipping to supply chains, sales, a changing market, the fate of brick-and-mortar bookstores, book challenges, and bans, the future of AI, etc. I try to remind myself that I can only impact so much. The things inside my control are the stories I write and, to a smaller extent, the ways I share my work in the world. I try to focus on what I can control, as well as the joy I find in the craft of telling a story, instead of the many things outside my control. 
 
What were some of the struggles you faced during your writing career?

Because writing is not my full-time job, it can be a struggle to give my stories the space and time they need to grow into what they could be. Balancing work, family, health challenges, volunteering, and the many things life throws at us with an extra job like writing can be a lot. Sometimes, writing is able to take the front seat and other times, it has to wait patiently in the background. I miss being away from my stories in those seasons, but I trust that something new will always be waiting. I think a lot about this advice from Stephen King -  "Put your desk in the corner, and every time you sit down there to write, remind yourself why it isn't in the middle of the room. Life isn't a support system for art. It's the other way around." 


Are things all breezy and easy now? Explain.

If you've read this far, you probably already know my answer to this! Of course not, but I don't expect there will ever be a season in my writing career where all things are breezy and easy. This is an ever-changing industry with new challenges every day. The best we can do is honor our craft and adjust the best we can. We can remind ourselves of why we write in the first place and follow that "why" as long as it makes sense to you and your life.

 
Is there anything you know now that you wish you had known earlier on that you think might be helpful for other writers?

This is a hard question because what motivates one person can discourage someone else. I like data. I like understanding the reality of the publishing industry. For me, working as a bookseller has opened my eyes to the absolute miracle it is to get a single book published, ever, much less have that book find a lasting place on the shelf. I know the numbers, I know the odds, and for me, this helps me understand why it is that so many beautifully crafted stories have a hard time finding a publishing home. Recognizing that this is out of my control is freeing to me as a writer and artist. But I always hesitate to share those numbers in a concrete fashion because I've seen it have the opposite impact on others.
 
Anything else you'd like to share?

I want to thank everyone who has ever shared one of my books with young readers. So much of this process, in the beginning, involves other adults reading your work, but there is something so deeply gratifying about the moment you finally get to share your book with kids. Their reactions, connections, and responses to my work have been the best part of this journey, so thank you to all of you who help make that happen.

July 2023 Feature Interview With Children’s Author, Aya Khalil, conducted by Chelsea DiCicco

Hello again! Welcome to the July FEATURE INTERVIEW. This month I'm excited to introduce you to a special guest, Children's Author, Aya Khalil. Aya is such an inspiration and I cant' wait for you to get to know her a little better. For those of you who might already know her- I'm sure you already know. The beginning to publishing:

When did you first know you wanted to pursue writing? Was it something you always loved and envisioned for yourself, or did it begin later? 

I've always loved writing. I loved writing poetry and writing in journals. In high school, I really wanted to pursue writing more professionally when I graduated. I graduated from college with a BA in communication and English Literature and also went to get my master's degree in education later.


When and how did your professional journey toward publishing begin? 

It wasn't until I had my own kids, and my oldest was about four years old when I knew I wanted to become a children's book author after finding it so hard to find books with Arab and Muslim characters. So, this was about six years ago. I was also working at a diverse school and wished there were more diverse books that represented the diverse student population. So, I got to work. 

What were some of the first steps you had to take? 

I joined a local SCBWI critique group and spent hours at my local library reading new picture books. I listened to publishing podcasts, YouTube videos and did a lot of googling. Later I joined 12x12 and took classes at Highlights and InkedVoices, and Writing Barn. 

For authors/illustrators who may be just starting out, do you have any suggestions on first steps or recommendations on sites/groups they could visit/join? 
I wish I had taken more craft classes during those earlier years with Highlights or Writing Barn or joined 12x12. But I didn't know about them! Those places are truly gems, and there are affordable options as well! There are also great resources online, like Josh Funk's Free resources and Storystorm. 

Road Bumps, Tips, Encouragement:

Throughout the publishing process, are there any challenges you’ve personally had to face and if so, how were you able to overcome them? 

I faced a ton of challenges. Contrary to some belief, as an Arab American Muslim, it was very hard breaking into the industry. It's also still challenging being on submission, and I still get a lot of rejections. It's still part of the industry and part of the job. It's not personal. You write, you submit, and you get rejected. No matter how many awards your book has gotten or if your previous book was bought at auction. 

Also, my debut picture book, The Arabic Quilt, illustrated by Anait Semirdzhyan was on a banned list in 2021. There's more information about it here. 

But right after that, my publisher told me that two districts bought a total of 22,000 copies of the book! So, I knew the problem wasn't the book. They also asked me if I would be interested in writing another, and I was thrilled. I wrote The Great Banned Books Bake Sale, which comes out on August 1st. 


Do you have any people in your life who have been especially helpful in offering support? 

Yes, so many. I'm not sure where to start and don't want to miss anyone, but I have great support from author friends, and I don't know where I would be without them. We get on calls together at random times, send voice notes to each, and even send WhatsApp messages to each other at odd hours throughout the day. I am extremely grateful for them all, and you know who you are!  I am also grateful for my Kidlit in Color team and Highlight Foundation Muslim fellows.

We all know that publishing is a very special industry in which a lot of beauty and excitement await us. But there are also many slow moments… and sometimes disappointment. For people who may not have friends/family who are familiar with the inner workings of the publishing industry and who don’t yet have a writing community to lean on for advice/encouragement, do you have any motivational words of wisdom or recommendations on how to handle the discouraging moments of publishing? 

It's very discouraging and just part of the process, so always remind yourself of that. Sometimes it's okay to take a step back and say okay, I'm getting a ton of rejections with similar feedback; let’s fix this. Then go back to your critique partners, take more craft classes, and work on it. And also, sometimes, it's okay to set books to the side and revisit them later. Maybe a few years from now, you'll find an agent or editor who is looking for a similar concept. So it's okay to be upset about it, but just keep writing.

Books, inspiration, and illustration:

I always love talking with authors about this subject. It’s always such a happy thing to share! So, I know this year had three books scheduled to come out. One is already here and two are on their way. Can you tell us a little bit about them?

Yes! The Night Before Eid, illustrated by Rashin Kheiriyeh came out in March of 2023, and it's about three generations bonding of Eid treats. It's such a special picture book for many different reasons, but especially because it's the childhood Eid book of my dreams.  

The Great Banned Books Bake Sales comes out in August and is a companion to The Arabic Quilt and illustrated by Anait Kanzi and her classmates find out that the new diverse books are not in the library, and so she and her classmates come up with a plan: a protest and bake sale to get the books back on the shelf! 

My First Book of Arabic Words comes out in October and is illustrated by Chaymaa Sobhy and is an ABC book on Arabic Language and Culture which I am so excited about as well. 


What was your inspiration behind these stories? 

The Night Before Eid's inspiration was all of the joy and love that's connected to Eid and the night before Eid in our family. The Great Banned Books Bake Sale's inspiration is loosely based on true stories of when The Arabic Quilt was banned, and I talked about it in the backmatter.  For My First Book of Arabic Words, the publisher approached me, and I was thrilled because I would've loved to see something similar to this growing up in a bilingual Arabic-English household, plus my kids are also bilingual English-Arabic speakers, and I think they'll love it, especially Chaymaa's vibrant illustrations. 

Let’s talk a little about illustration. I’ve had a lot of people ask me about illustration. Many people who aren’t in publishing are surprised to learn that picture book writers don’t always illustrate their own stories and they also don't get to pick them *usually*. Since you are a writer, not an illustrator, I’d love to hear a little about what that is like. 

Yes! Publishers usually do choose the illustrators. For The Arabic Quilt, Anait did an incredible job, and she's an immigrant herself! With The Night Before Eid also, Rashin's work is stunning. For My First Book of Arabic Words, I actually recommended Chaymaa Sobhy to the editor as I was a huge fan of her work, and I was so excited when she was available! Plus, she's Egyptian, so it's very exciting to work with her. 

Here's a question for my readers who are still in the query trenches: 
What is the querying process like when sending queries to an agent as just a text writer? 

It's challenging, and we see many agents saying they only want author-illustrators. It's been a few years since I queried, but I hear it's even tougher now. I would say just keep working on your craft and connect with other writers who are also querying so you can talk/vent about it! 

For my readers who are newly agented with a publishing deal but haven’t yet had their manuscripts matched with an illustrator, what is that process like? 

Sometimes that takes a really long time! I'm talking months and months. So just wait and know that editors and trying their best to match your beautiful words with the best illustrator for it. They're investing a lot of money into everything and pay attention to all of the detail. 

You need a lot of patience in this industry. Querying, being on submission, waiting for your contract, waiting on being matched with the illustrator, waiting for the illustrations, waiting for it to be printed, and the list goes on. It's a long process, but it's worth the wait. 

While we’re talking about illustration, I wanted to take a moment to mention your illustrators: 

What was your experience working with them individually? How involved were you, if at all with the illustration side of things? Did you have an opportunity to offer any input? Examples? 

I was sent sketches and asked for feedback. I sent some minor suggestions and tweaks here and there for both. I think for the Eid book, I did have in the text that Zain had curly hair, but the sketches weren't too clear if his hair was clear or straight, so I wanted to make sure it was curly. 

This question goes along with the last question, but I wanted to list it separately because I think this is an area that deserves specific attention. What are your thoughts on art notes? Do you use them? If so, how much and how often do you implement them? 

I do as needed! I tend to write longer picture books, so I try to use them to make my word count shorter (haha)! I don't think I used them that much for The Night Before Eid, though, or The Great Banned Books Bake Sale. 


Were there any things that surprised you about the illustration process? Explain. 

That it's really hard to change things once the colors go in! So really take many looks during the sketches and early illustrations. And this isn't surprising, but illustrators do so much research themselves too and a lot of work goes into it all.


Do you have a favorite spread in each book that you’d like to share? If so, what’s your favorite part about them and why? 

The last spread of The Night Before Eid is so cozy and like a big hug, but I love it all. The Great Banned Books Bake Sale there are many, but I love all the ones where the classmates are together because it shows unity and solidarity, especially at the end! 


Any final words of encouragement to share with our readers today? 

Keep reading current books in the genre you write, take craft classes, it's okay to put work to the side for a bit (or for years or forever), and believe in yourself and your work.

June 2023 Feature Interview with Children’s Book Author, Nancy Churnin, Conducted by Chelsea DiCicco

Hello again, friends, and welcome to another fantastic FEATURE INTERVIEW. This month I'm talking with visiting guest, Nancy Churnin.

Nancy’s Bio: 
Nancy Churnin is an award-winning children’s book author who writes about people that inspire children to be kind and make the world a better place. Her Dear Mr. Dickens won the 2021 National Jewish Book Award and 2022 Sydney Taylor Honor and is a Junior Library Guild Selection, a National Federation of Press Women 1st Place winner, and on the Bank Street College Best Children’s Books list. Nancy is the author of 10 picture book biographies and will welcome six more books -- a mix of chapter books, a board book, historical fiction, and contemporary fiction in 2023. Additional honors include: two Sydney Taylor Notables, four Social Studies Notable Trade Books for Young People; the South Asia Book Award, two Children and Teen's Choice Book Awards finalists; starred reviews from School Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, and Publishers Weekly; and multiple state book lists. Nancy lives in North Texas. Her books come with free teacher guides, resources, and projects on her website, nancychurnin.com.

Beginnings & Inspiration

How did you end up here in the wonderful and magical world of publishing children’s books?
 
I had always dreamed of writing children’s books like the wonderful books my mother read to me – books that could enchant, teach, challenge, books that could make you think and aspire to do better and be better, books that could take you on magical and inspiring journeys. But it was not until I had become a journalist and struck an unexpected friendship with Steve Sandy that I felt the urgency to make that dream happen without any more delay. My friend Steve is a Deaf historian and it is his dream that more people know about the great Deaf baseball player and hero William Hoy. I felt compelled to write the book that my friend needed to have in the world. 

When did you first begin your journey in publishing, and what was that process like?
  
I promised Steve in 2003 that I would write a children’s book about William Hoy. But The William Hoy Story, which became my picture book debut, didn’t come out until 2016! As a journalist, I thought the journey would be fast and easy. After a mountain of rejections, I began to realize I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I took many online classes, including classes by Susanna Hill and Mira Reisberg, I joined critique groups, Rate Your Story and as soon as I found out about the 12X12 Challenge, I joined that in 2013. It was through 12X12 that I found my agent, Karen Grencik, whom I submitted to when she was the agent of the month in July 2013. After another year of rejections for Hoy – but this time personalized and encouraging – I revised again and we sold the new revision at the first submission in 2014 to Wendy McClure at Albert Whitman & Company. Karen is still my agent and friend and I’m about to sign my 20th contract.

The Beast of Publishing: Steps & Timeframe

I know I have people reading my blog who are in different stages of the publishing/writing process. 
Some are just starting out. 
Others are seeking representation. 
Some are already agented but don’t have any book deals (YET)! 
And some already have book deals or previously published works. 
But for our newer writers who are just beginning, they often face similar ones to that we all wonder… 

“How long will this take?” 

“What now? What NEXT?”

Could you give us a rough idea about what necessary steps you took or would recommend taking, and what the publishing timeframe was like for you; from querying to landing an agent- signing with an agent to landing a first publishing deal - and first publishing deal to first publication date? 

At first, I approached this as a journalist – seeing a story in terms of a word count and a beginning, middle, and end. It took me a while to realize that there was a complexity and craft to children’s books and that I had to reach deep inside to find and show – not tell – my emotional connection to the story. I had to read many picture books and study how they were put together and how they made me feel. I learned in my classes, the craft books, from my critique partners, and from my writing groups about leaving room for the illustrator, changing scenes, and creating page turns. I learned to have patience with the process. Even when I finally landed that first acceptance in 2014, it took two years before The William Hoy Story debuted in March 2016. But what I had also learned was not to sit around and wait for the next thing to happen. Once I was on this journey, I was on the journey for good, knowing that I can’t control the pace of publishing, but I can control the time and passion I devote to creating new stories. So even before The William Hoy Story came out, I had sold my second book, Manjhi Moves a Mountain, to Marissa Moss at Creston Books. That came out in 2017, followed by three more books in 2018.

Is there anything or anyone who significantly helped you to get to where you are today? 

Too many to name! I will say that Susanna Hill’s and Mira Reisberg’s classes were game-changers in getting me to understand the craft journey I was starting. My early critique partners and still friends, Miranda Paul and Vivian Kirkfield provided amazing support and inspiration when I needed it most. I am grateful to my first editors, Wendy McClure and Albert Whitman, and Marissa Moss at Creston Books, for giving a debut author a chance. My husband and family never stopped believing in and encouraging me when I needed that extra reassurance that I wasn’t crazy for pursuing this path; my husband still embarrasses me in the most endearing way by handing out my book cards wherever we go. I’m thankful for the generosity of kidlit groups like Kidlit411 that offer a bounty of support and advice every day. I adore the wonderful educators and librarians and the children who sustain and propel me every day. I am grateful for the individuals and organizations that continue to encourage my writing and keep me learning, like PJ Library, which provides free books for children and just sent me on the most amazing author journey to Israel. But also – and this is key – I couldn’t do it without the people I write about and the people who turn to me to write about them. I would never have written The William Hoy Story without the support and help of Steve Sandy, who never lost faith in me on the 13-year journey between promise and publication, and the kind and generous Hoy family. Years after I wrote Charlie Takes His Shot, How Charlie Sifford Broke the Color Barrier in Golf, I am grateful for my continued friendship with and support of Dr. Sifford’s family and friends. I only write about people I love and admire. When I commit to writing their stories, they are on the journey with me, and it is their spirit that guides me and strengthens me on the path to bringing their life into the light.

Writing Tips, Shared Wisdom, and Writing Across Genres

Throughout the publishing process, has there been anything that really surprised you? Or have there been any obstacles you’ve had to overcome? If so, what were they, and how did you do so?

I was surprised by how long the journey to publication can be and how tricky it can be to determine if a story is not finding a home because it isn’t where it needs to be or because you haven’t found the editor who shares your vision. Often it is a combination of both! You need an editor who shares your vision, but you also need to keep working until the story is the best version of itself it can possibly be and then be open and willing to keep working on it with the editor and editorial team. It never bothers me to make changes. In fact, it uplifts and delights me every time I find a way to make the story better, stronger, and truer. We are all working together to create a book that lasts, and the work is about the story always – we are all on the same side, working for a story that is ship-worthy, that children can take out and sail in the sea of their imagination.

I love that mental attitude and metaphor of children setting sail in the sea of their imagination!

Sometimes in life, when we look back, we think, “I wish I had known this or that sooner… it would have helped so much!” Is there anything that you wish you had known earlier as a writer that you’d be able to share with other writers today?

I wish I had known earlier what I share with kids now on my school visits: that you don’t fail until you give up; that as long as you keep going, it’s just a question of how long it takes to succeed. I knew enough of that truth not to give up, but in the beginning, I also struggled with frustration and doubt when I couldn’t seem to deliver what I had promised in getting Hoy’s story published. There are still some stories that take longer than others to get right or to get a publishing home or both, but I now have patience and determination on the journey. I don’t give myself a hard time when something doesn’t click. I just keep working on that story and other stories. I put in the time and know that each journey takes as long as it takes.

It was mentioned earlier that you write across genres. You have picture book biographies, board books, historical fiction, etc. Can you tell us more about how you started out and managed to navigate different genres of writing in publishing?
 
I love reading all genres of books and wanted to expand my range of writing. At the same time, I realized that if I wanted to try writing a different format I had to have an idea that fit that format. When I thought about a board book, I thought about the toddlers I know. I thought about the great-grandchildren visiting my now elderly mother and how much joy that brings her. Soon, the idea of a board book emerged that involved an elderly person alone until there are knocks on a door and a family arrives bringing food and cheer. To anchor the book on 10 spreads, I made it a counting book from one to ten and soon I had Counting on Shabbat, a 58-word rhyming board book about counting, Shabbat, and kindness that I hope will inspire kids to reach out to the elders in their lives and communities.

On my school visits, many of the upper elementary students had asked if I write chapter books. So it was a longstanding goal of mine to someday be able to say yes! The chapter books that I have coming out in June were a natural evolution from picture book biographies to chapter book biographies. Thomas Edison, How a Boy Who Learned Differently Changed the World, and Elizabeth Freeman, Fighting for Freedom are my first work-for-hire books. They are published by Core Knowledge, a non-profit that shares my mission of writing stories about heroes that inspire kids to be heroes, too. I took on these assignments because I admire Edison and Freeman and also to push myself to write longer. I confess that after I agreed to do them, I panicked. But after being reassured by my editor that I could indeed pull this off, I got to work and enjoyed the opportunity to show more detail about the lives of my subjects. In fact, once I got going, I had to make an effort to cut back!

Do you have any tips that you can share for writers who may be interested in breaking into writing across genres themselves? 

Just do it. I am a great believer in craft courses. I’ve taken them. I’ve given them at conferences, at SCBWI, and at The Writing Barn in Austin. At the same time, it’s important to remember that you can learn things through the actual act of writing that you can’t learn from studying writing. I took a chapter book class that I enjoyed, and I know it helped me, but nothing substitutes for making a plan, following it, sometimes breaking the plan, getting it down on paper, and then revising until I get the story where it needs to be. One more piece of advice: find yourself, someone you trust to be your reader. For my board book, my critique partners were invaluable. For my chapter books, I turned to my good friend Patricia Sarles, the coordinator of library services at the New York City School Library System, as my first reader. Her excellent notes helped me see and write more clearly.

New Books and Extra Resources!

Speaking of writing across genres… this year was a big year for you! In 2023 you had six new books come out. That must be so exciting. We’d love to share in that excitement with you and hear more about them! 

Thank you for asking about my book babies! 
Coming up first in June are my two chapter book biographies with Core Knowledge. 
Thomas Edison, How A Boy Who Learned Differently Changed the World is the story of the great inventor with a focus on how Edison’s differences – his Deafness and how he learned differently – became his strengths. I hope his story helps children see how their differences can be their strengths, too. 

Elizabeth Freeman, Fighting for Freedom, is the story of an enslaved woman in Massachusetts who used the newly approved state constitution’s words about freedom to sue for her own freedom in court. She won, which led to Massachusetts becoming one of the nation’s first free states. Freeman had a firm inner sense of right and wrong, of her own worth, and of everyone’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I hope her story inspires kids to reach within for their moral compass, to know their self-worth, and support everyone’s rights.
Coming up in September are two picture books. 

Lila and the Jack-o’-Lantern, Halloween Comes to America is my first historical fiction book. I’ve always loved Halloween, and I wanted to share how this favorite holiday was a gift from immigrants. Lila and her family leave Ireland in 1850 because of the Potato Famine. Lila and her little brother and sister worry about leaving favorite traditions behind, like Halloween, where they carved turnips to scare away a spirit named Jack. In America, Lila can’t find turnips. But she finds a new friend, Julia, at a vegetable stand. And in this story about how immigrants have merged their traditions with ours to create new American gifts, she finds a strange gourd – a pumpkin – that she and Julia carve, giving America its own twist on the Irish holiday celebration.

Mama’s Year with Cancer is my first co-authored book, co-authored with Shayna Vincent. Shayna, a young mother with breast cancer, couldn’t find the book she wanted to share with her daughters about what to know about living with cancer, so I proposed that we write the book she wanted to have in the world. Mama’s Year with Cancer is told by a child and takes you from January through December, through a messy, loving, challenging journey until Mama rings the bell that shows her chemotherapy is done. 

Coming in November is a picture book biography and my first board book. 
Valentines for All, Esther Howland Captures America’s Heart is a picture book biography of Esther Howland, who got the idea of creating and selling Valentine cards that would help people who struggle with words express what they had in their hearts. She created the first American Valentine’s card company in the early 1800s. 

I shared earlier about my board book, Counting on Shabbat. I hope this 58-word rhyming story about an elderly person surprised and delighted by a visit from a young family encourages families to visit the seniors and those who are alone in our communities.

I saw that your website offers educational resources with your books. I’m a huge fan of books that come with extras! There are so many great ways to utilize them. They’re helpful to educators and students and make a terrific asset to schools and classrooms. But they aren’t just wonderful in school settings, they can also be extremely useful to parents/caregivers and librarians too. I know for my STEAM Homeschool Students, whom I host in the library every month, I love sharing newly discovered resources with the parents who visit. Books like these are so helpful to these families. Can you tell us a little about some of the resources that you offer, what they include, and how people can find out more about them?

My mother is a retired teacher, and it is very important to me to provide teacher guides, resources, and projects for every one of my books. I have a dedicated page for each book on my website. Because so many of the books are based on real people, my resources include primary sources, photos, and videos of the real people when available. I commission the teacher guides from educators that connect the book with curriculum. There is always a project and an opportunity to share pictures of the children’s work on the project pages. For example, the project for The William Hoy Story is HOY FOR THE ALL. Kids send pictures of persuasive letters they write and send to the National Baseball Baseball Hall of Fame, asking for Hoy to be inducted; he would be the first Deaf player honored there. For Manjhi Moves a Mountain, it is MOVE YOUR OWN MOUNTAIN. Manjhi moved an actual mountain to help his village, but every time we help others, we move mountains. Kids send pictures of kind things they’ve done, and I post them and praise them for moving mountains. The new books will have projects, too. The project for Counting on Shabbat is COUNTING ON KINDNESS.

All. I love rainbows!

Lilacs

Favorite animal? 
All. I don’t want to get in trouble picking between my dog and cats, and besides, I just fell in love with a camel on my trip to Israel :)

Favorite book(s)? I’ll allow up to five because I know choosing favorite books is very hard… 
The Wizard of Oz, A Tale of Two Cities, The Last of the Just, The Color Purple, The Chronicles of Narnia… (may have different answers on different days)...

Sweet or salty? 
Both, but my real faves are crispy, chewy, and crunchy!

Beach or mountains? 
Both! Although my magical childhood summers in the Catskill Mountains may give mountains the edge.

May 2023 Double Feature Interview with Children’s Book Author Marzieh Abbas, and Children’s Book Illustrator Anu Chouhan, Conducted by Chelsea DiCicco

Welcome back to THE BLOG! This month I’m pleased to introduce you to not one but two special guests! That’s right… this month is a DOUBLE Feature Interview! Please welcome, Marzieh Abbas!


Marzieh's Bio
Raised between the bustling cities of Dubai, U.A.E, and Karachi, Pakistan, Marzieh loves traveling, reading, and samosas. She is a member of SCBWI, 12x12, and a graduate of the Lyrical Language Lab, Children's Book Academy, and Storyteller Academy. She is active on Twitter, where she continues to form connections with the Writing Community, runs a kidlit review group on Facebook, and blogs about her author journey and life in Pakistan on Instagram. 


Marzieh was thoughtful enough to ask if the illustrator for her new book A DUPATTA IS could join us on the interview today… and of course, I said yes!! It’s not every day I get to interview an author and illustrator -especially ones working on the same project. So, right off the bat, we’re in for a treat.


Let’s start with Marzieh’s portion of the interview questions…


First off, I love asking my guests: what landed you in the crazy and magical world of publishing?

PPD! As crazy as it sounds, I had to shut down my home-run cake business of nine years when my second born was just under a year old. I just couldn’t cope. Later I found out I hadn’t fully recovered from PPD and felt overwhelmed with all the juggling I had been doing. I began writing letters to my children and Quran journaling in an attempt to process my feelings. I had never dreamed of publishing a book, and although I enjoyed jotting down thoughts from time to time, they weren’t very eloquent. I was missing my baking business so much I subconsciously ended up writing a story about a mom with two kids who enjoyed baking. It was also Ramadan at the time, and I incorporated that special time of the year for Muslims into the story too. All this culminated in two books with Islamic publishers. I soon realized I could write for non-Muslim kids too! That’s when I stumbled upon the Children’s Book Academy course, won a partial scholarship, and the world of traditional publishing invited me in.


I know the big question for many writers is: “When is my career going to take off?? How long??” and the answer can vary greatly, depending on many different variables. For instance, which route of publication you decide to take… whether it’s submitting directly to a small house or trying to find an agent, or approaching it from the independent side. Can you give us an idea of the time frame of your publishing journey so far?

Mira’s CBA course ran in the fall of 2019. I began querying in March 2020 with only two completed manuscripts. I signed with my agent, the lovely Lynnette Novak, in August 2020, and my first book, A DUPATTA IS… sold in October 2020 (the contract was signed in January 2021, though.) And it just released on April 11th, 2023!


What avenue of publishing did you decide to go with? And can you elaborate on some of the steps you took to get there? 

My Islamic books sold before I signed with my agent. The Muslim publishers work differently, and the process isn’t nearly as rigorous as the (secular) traditional publishing route. 

After Mira’s course, I was convinced I wanted to go the traditional publishing route and not self-publish. I also saw the benefits of signing with an agent and invested a lot of time scanning MSWL and browsing Query Tracker, so I knew I was querying the agents who were interested in the kind of stories I was writing. 

I joined SCBWI in 2020, and The Book was also a very helpful guide, as were the Blue Boards on the forum. I sent Lynnette my work in March 2020. She liked my manuscript and asked me to send her more work. I did, and she didn’t connect with the other story I queried her with. I then went on to invest in professional query critiques with a couple of authors. I polished my work and sent out another round of queries, this time using another manuscript, around June 2020. I also queried Joyce Sweeny of The Seymour Agency at this time. She wrote back saying her PB client list was full and she’d shared it with her colleagues, and Lynnette loved it and would get in touch. When Lynnette did touch base, I told her I had already sent her my work previously, but it had gone through considerable revisions since. She loved my work and wanted to have ‘The Call.’ 

I alerted the other agents who were considering, and two more agents were interested. I was in the process of sending them more material, and subsequently, we were setting up times for calls when I spoke to Lynnette. I watched all the Bookends Agency videos on which questions to ask during the call. I literally asked her any and everything I had concerns about, even the sticky questions. She was happy to answer all my questions, and we connected so well during the call. I also had a friend check date on Publishers Marketplace for me. Lynnette’s sales were the most impressive, and before I got off the call, my decision was made!

In total, I sent out approximately 30 queries. 

Wow. That is incredible! I love your persistence. And I'm glad you mention the Bookends Channel. Bookends videos are definitely a wonderful resource to use as a helpful guide at pretty much all stages of the publishing process. So, here's the next question. How many books do you currently have published?

I also have several upcoming children’s books, including:

And some unannounced projects I can’t speak about yet 🙂

I know writing can be solitary. Did you have anyone who supported or inspired you throughout this process? 

I have no friends or family who quite understood what I was doing at the beginning. Being a writer or a freelancer isn’t very common here in Pakistan. 

I found my community online through a critique group I formed through SCBWI, friends I met virtually at classes I took with The Writing Barn, and in 2021 I joined the 12x12PB Challenge and love the sense of community there. 

I’ve made awesome connections through the KIDLIT411, Manuscript Swap group on FB, the #WritingCommunity and the 5 am WritersClub on Twitter, the Desi Kidlit Community, and the Traditionally published and Agented Muslim writer’s group on FB. 

As I geared up for the launch of my debut book, I also joined Street Teams, PBSpree, The Dream Team, and Kidlit Works! They’ve been so supportive, and we even swap manuscripts. 

I also volunteered to be a mentor through the PBRising Stars program last year and made many author friends there. Groups like ‘Agented Authors’ and ‘On Sub’ and a Slack group called The Rockets have made the whole writing and submission process much less lonely. 

Thank you for sharing all of this information with us, Marzieh. These are all fantastic suggestions and places to visit. I was familiar with most all of the ones mentioned but a few stood out as something new. I hadn't heard of 5 AM WritersClub or Desi Kidlit Community, so it was awesome to learn more about them throughout the interview process.


So, what would you say is the biggest challenge you’ve had to face as a writer? And what helped you through it?

I feel like I’m constantly wondering if my next book will sell. The process is different for every book, and the pressure actually keeps mounting, with option clauses and non-compete clauses kicking in as more books come under contract. I am still struggling to keep myself from falling into this trap. The pressure of ‘what’s next?’ can cripple creativity. And sometimes, when you’re active on social media, it becomes even more challenging. My advice would be to focus on what brings you joy, write in several age categories, take frequent SM breaks, share stories of your struggles as much as sharing stories of your failure, and just go with the flow. This is a very unpredictable industry, and there’s no use in trying to crack the code of success!


If you could offer one piece of helpful advice to a new writer… what would it be?

Keep honing your craft through conferences, webinars, and tuning into podcasts. Keep revising your stories, as all the magic happens during revision!

Okay… now for some exciting book talk. I know April 11th was the scheduled release of your debut picture book, A DUPATTA IS. Which, no doubt, you’re THRILLED about. Since we have the special opportunity of having your illustrator here today as well, I wanted to ask you a few questions about this project. 

From what I’ve heard from some other authors and illustrators in the publishing industry, usually, the author and illustrator don’t really have much contact- if any at all- throughout the process of the project. 

Can you tell us about your working experience with your illustrator, Anu?

Anu and I communicated often. My editor, Emily Settle, and Art Director, Mariam Quraishi, asked for my input often during the process. I pitched in at every stage of the process, from character design to final cover choice. Anu wanted to make sure all the depictions of dupattas from different regions of Pakistan were accurate. It was an amazing, collaborative process, and I hope that shines through. I’m also so lucky to be collaborating with the same team on a companion book, HENNA IS…, which releases in July 2024.


Is there anything that surprised you about the illustrations in A DUPATTA IS? 

Since Anu is also South Asian, I knew she would be familiar with the culture of the region. But when I saw her drawings of the girl in her grandma’s room, it brought tears to my eyes. The furniture in the room, right down to the wooden bangle stand, reminded me of my own grandma’s room! Magical!


Do you have a favorite spread of images in the story? 

It’s hard to pick a favorite (they’re all so beautiful, and Anu is so so talented)!, but I love the page with the hijabi bride best.

Anu's Bio
Anu Chouhan is a Punjabi-Canadian illustrator and video game artist. A trained animator and character designer with a background in game development, Anu often combines her love of her cultural heritage into her art, as well as always being inspired by anime, nature, and global fashion. Her unique, edgy, and energetic art has been featured by the CBC, the BBC, Harper’s Bazaar Bride India, The Times of India, and The Times of London. 


How did you end up in the publishing world? What led you here? Where did it all begin?

I was very lucky that my amazing agent Thao Le reached out to me on Twitter. At the time, I was actively trying to get more freelance work and was sharing my work through hashtags like #PortfolioDay and #SouthAsianArtists. When we connected, I indicated that I was interested in illustrating books as well as working on my own picture book. Since then, Thao has helped me work on 7 books, including one written and illustrated by me!



How thrilling! It's wonderful to hear that hashtags like this can help people make illustrative connections within the publishing industry.
Has art always played a role in your life in some aspect? If so, how?

I have enjoyed drawing as a hobby ever since I was little. I work full-time in the game industry, and illustration is often a big part of that. But making time for my personal art and freelance projects like books every now and then is also very fulfilling.


I can imagine! I believe finding balance is a key component to a living a happy and fulfilling life. And it sounds like you've managed to successfully do this.
Can you tell us a bit about your journey in children’s illustration?

I have been illustrating picture books and graphic novels since 2020. At that time, working on books was my main focus. Nowadays, I'm back to working at a studio, so it's important for me to find balance. But often, working on picture books is a fun way to shift my creative gears.


I know you’re trained in animation and character design, and you also have a background in mobile game development, which is SO cool. I’m curious… in what ways does your illustrative work differ from these? And what are the similarities, if any?

With studio work, you're often working within a specific style that's already been established based on the property. With my own art, and often with my books, it's a way for me to establish my own style of art. I've been lucky in that a lot of publishers and art directors have granted me creative freedom when it comes to how I visually interpret the stories; this was definitely the case with A DUPATTA IS... But that said, my drawing style from standalone illustrations vs books is also quite different!


When it comes to your illustration, can you share with us what your creative process like?

I track my tasks by writing in my planner (feels better than using a calendar app). I try to give myself ample research and sketching time before I begin working on a book so that I'm not coming up with ideas on the fly later (although sometimes, that has happened with awesome results). 

When it comes to my own drawings, I like to sketch on paper and let inspiration come to me slowly. Forcing an illustration when I'm tired or uninspired has never worked out successfully for me.

I love this so much. And I completely agree! I find personally with my writing, if I try to "force" creativity, vs letting it come naturally, even if I do manage to get words on a page, the quality isn't the same. I say it all the time: creativity is an art form, and as Toy Story 2 taught us, "you can't rush art"!
Are there any challenges that you’ve had to face within the publishing/illustration arena? If so, what were they, and how did you overcome them?

I think that fair wages are a big issue within the arts. There are many gigs out there that don't pay artists what they are worth, and it is important for us to approach projects carefully and understand what is worth our time and what is not. I've been learning a lot about this within the publishing industry, but thankfully my agency is really good at guiding me!


Thank you for sharing this! I'm sure that this will help a lot of illustrators to make sure that they're getting paid properly.

And for our last question today, if you could share one piece of creative wisdom with other illustrators and artists looking to break into the publishing industry, what would it be?

Speaking from experience, it is really important to know when to say "no" to a project. There be times when there are gaps between projects, but there will also be times when a bunch of overlapping gigs will come in at once! It's tempting to say yes to all of them, but it's not worth sacrificing your mental health! 

It's important to take breaks and make time for other aspects of life. Also, remember to stretch your back muscles often lol.
